Is it ok to mention the specific names of physicians in your PS that you have had significant interaction with through research or shadowing (ie Dr. Smith), or would it be better to refer to the doctor in general (ie anesthesiologist)? Thanks

I would mention the specific doctors especially if you go into detail w/ what you did. It can give it a more personal feel to your PS. JMHO.

I did it and it worked out for me.

Now if you just list the doctors you have shadowed (ie I shadowed an ER doc, and anesthesiologist, a urologist and a pediatrician) I may come off as corny and forced. Use your judgement. One way or another it won't be the deciding factor for whether you get into a given school or not.

Thank you for your input. I did go into detail about the 3 names mentioned (the doctor I shadow, the PI of my lab, and the graduate student I have worked with). I am asking because one of the people I have asked to read my PS has made the recommendation of removing names because he felt that people outside of my university would not know the people I am talking about. But I agree with you that it adds a personal touch. Any other opinions? Thanks again.

I listed names in my earlier drafts but changed my mind as I revised. Writing out names made my PS read too much like a resume. Whether some readers of your PS will be put off by your name dropping is another issue to consider.

I mentioned one doctor's name in my PS and that's really it. I know others, but no need to throw unnecessary stuff in. That's what interviews are for!
