Hi, I am a non-traditional student planning on applying to POD-School for fall of 2009. I am looking for information on initially contacting a DPM for shadowing experience. I know that the APMA site has the mentoring network and you can make contact through there to get shadowing experience. My question is, what does the initial contact email to the Dr. need to say? I want to make a good impression and would like input on what to say in the letter and any additional advice that would be benificial to someone just starting their shadowing experience.

Thanks,

Eric B.

My advisor gave me some good advice last year before I started 3rd year clinics. I visited his office and had a ton of questions. We chatted awhile, but in closing, he simply said to me, "be on time, and be interested. The rest will fall into place." Well, he was right.

I think you will find that the same goes for shadowing. The people who listed their email on the APMA mentor network did that because they want to meet interested students and help them learn. Just tell them that you want to learn about pod n your letter, but do proofread the letter and make it professional since it's a small, well connected profession. GL

I agree with Feli. The only other thing you'll want to do is find out what time to show up, how long you can stay, and what to wear. Once you have these issues resolved, you'll have a great day if you come prepared to watch, listen and ask good questions. Have fun!
