Is there anyone could give me a clear formula for calculating electrolyte solutions. I have them memorized already but I am kind of doubt from what I learned..It sounds weird but I just want to master this formula for my upcoming test. So could you guys help me out here..kindly write down how to get meq, mmoles, mOsmoles and osmolarity.
Also, do we need to know the chem formulas and their corresponding molecular weight? I am just curious..Thanks......

Review the attachment. So far, I've never seen any other way that's better than how this was put together.

A few key items:
  1. Always convert via mmol (the center of the picture) or it will not work. For example, if you want to convert mOsm to mEq, first take mOsm divide by # species to get to mmol, then multiple # charges to get to mEq.
  2. # species refers to total # species(just add). For example, Al2(SO4)3 is a total of 5 species (2 Al and 3 SO4)
  3. look at either substance and calculate total # charge, regardless of sign. For example, Al2(SO4)3 - look at Al only. Al has +3 charge, there's a total of 2, so 2x3=6. Or, same example, SO4 has -2 charge, there's a total of 3x2=6.

Good luck!
