I'm another pre-med turned pre-dent and I'm wondering if there are any "Dean's Scholarship" type of offers given to incoming dental students. I know it happens in med schools but what about dental schools? Thanks a lot and I guess I now join you guys in the "darkside". 😀

i'm almost positive nobody gives a free ride, but i know a few schools like upenn and case do offer substantial scholarships to their top picks. upenn's is like half of tuition and case's is 10-20,000/yr. starting with those with 3.8+ and 20+ on all sections.

Yeah I really wasn't completely sure because I've been scanning the pre-dent forum for a while and never saw anything posted. I still have to take my DAT next year (I'm a Sophomore) but I currently stand at a Cum GPA of 3.839 and hope to apply with a Cum GPA of 3.910. As far as DAT goes I have the Kaplan "Blue Book" but I honestly haven't looked it over much. I've taken all my pre-dent pre-reqs though! But anyway, thanks for your reply and if anyone else has further info please feel free to chime in at anytime 😀 .

P.S. Also do dental schools care if you are a URM? I'm a first generation Mexican-American college student. I know there is always controversy in the pre-allo forums about this 🙄. Do dental schools also actively recruit URM's or is it different for dental schools. Thanks a bunch guys. Pre-Dents are the coolest! (no joke)

dental schools can increase or reduce your tuition based on performance. Remember if you get a very low GPA in dental school your tuition may be tripled...Watch out

What state do you live in?

I live in Texas and I think that all schools here give you a few extra points if you are hispanic or black. The San Antonio school definitely does, but I'm not 100% sure about the other ones.

One of my classmates was offered free tuition at NYU, but he would still have had to pay for living expenses, so I guess it wasn't a complete "free ride". NYU was really impressed with his research experience, so he thinks it was based more on that than his academic performance, which was good, but not outstanding.

UOP also gives out small merit-based scholarships, ranging from $30k-$60k. This is one amount split up over the 3 years. I've noticed about 10% of my class have received this scholarship.

I live in Wisconsin aggie-master. If I end up liking the research experience that I'm gonna have this summer I could end up applying with 1.5 year of research under my belt. Thanks a lot guys posts are very informative.

Tufts has Merit scholarships for top incoming students of about 4-6K. Then for the following years you have to perform well and be in the top of the dental class to keep getting it.

UCLA offers a Deans Scholarship in the amount of 10K, and to keep getting it you have to do very well in while in school.

I think there is more scholarships available if you do DDS/PhD programs, sort of like the MSTP programs for med schools.

Hi, with your stats, you should definitely apply to UW. They have a $60,000 scholarship that is specifically reserved for URM. Since tuition at our school is only around $14,000 per year (with no prospect of increasing for the next few years, the dean of the school has assured us), you'll have more than enough to cover 4 years of tuition. UW doesn't accept too many out-of-staters (~2) but the school LOVES minorities and with your GPA, they'll lay down a red carpet for you.

What type of research are you currently working on???

Penn offers a Dean's scholarship to the top applicants (I'm still not clear on what the criteria are) and it is good for 50% of the tuition and it is handed out to about 20-25% of the class.

Do you know where to get information on other schools that hook URMs up? I don't think I need any extra points to get into a dental school but if people are giving away money just because I pick "Hispanic" on my application then I might want to look further into where I apply.

I've heard that Uconn has a scholarhship for URM's...

Regarding the research, this summer I'm going to be participating in Vanderbilt University's Undergraduate Clinical Research Program where we get a chance to work in a Vandy med school faculty's lab and attend all these medical seminars along with shadowing at the teaching hospital. It's not a "URM only" program, it is made for prospective MD's, MD/Ph.D's. Too bad Vandy doesn't have a dental school 🙁 .

My "mentor", who just so happens to be the Chairman of the Biology department at my university, told me that if I end up liking the research I could join his lab starting this fall. His research is on "Genetics of breeding incompatibilities in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum", and he is an awesome guy.

If you are interested in Research, want to go to Dental school and are wanting help paying for school. You should consider a DDS/PhD program. The one I know of pretty much helps you pay for all of your schooling an a little bit of living money. It is a longer road than just dental school 7-8 years but you get out with little debt (depending on how you live) and experince in research which can open different doors for you.

Good luck with your road ahead.
