I completely messed up my first semester failed a course and ended up with a 1.2 GPA. From that semester I got my **** together and got 3.9-4.0 GPA in all my other semesters. Now I am 3rd year and pretty sure that I will get 3.3-3.55 cgpa by the end of my fourth year. My MCAT Preparation is pretty good so should get marks in range of 90-95 percentile. I have been volunteering at a hospital have done research and published a paper. I have everything else great but due to my first semester my cgpa will be between 3.3-3.55. So what do you guys think do I have a shot at medical school?

It seems that you're leaving out some important details from that first semester. A 1.2 GPA is extremely low, even with a failed class. If you took a standard courseload of five 3-credit classes and failed 1 while getting B's in the remaining classes, you would have a 2.4 GPA which is double what you had. How did you do in your other classes that you ended up with a 1.2?

Additionally, it is not at all fair to make assumptions about your MCAT score. That is something that you really cannot know until you've actually taken it and gotten your score back, so it is not a good idea to make predictions based on a projected score.

The only thing you can do is to try to get your gpa as high as possible and hope for the best on the MCAT. I don't think that one bad semester will keep you out of medical school; however, you will need to explain what happened and what you learned from your mistakes.

that is a wide range for your cGPA still. If it is a 3.3, I would recommend a Post-bac/SMP (depending on your MCAT).... If you get it to a 3.55 with only one bad semester and a good MCAT, you should be fine with medical school

Look bra,

I got into med school with a first semester just like yours.

Granted, I took gap years. But this semester won't destroy you. If you want it, find a way to make it happen.

Last bit of advice, APPLY EARLY AND APPLY ONLY ONCE. Do not waste your life by applying 2 or 3 cycles. Do not apply until you know you got this.

Agree with both of these.

Actually I messed up all my first semester courses and failed on course and got low 60s in my other courses. The thing was that my Student VISA was delayed so I missed first few weeks of university. I didn't want to miss a year so decided to start my university but Term Test started in the week I reached my university So didn't do good on those. Being in new country and transitioning from high school to university and covering the missed syllabus I didn't even realize when the 2nd term test were there and then Finals. So I couldn't do well in the courses. Now when I think of that semester I wish that I had deferred my offer for next year or should have taken that 1st semester off or something or should have taken less courses. For MCAT I am pretty sure I will do good but yeah you are write I should not make any assumptions.

Hey if you don't mind me asking what was your cgpa and mcat

Absolutely! Rising GPA trends are always a good thing. You've demonstrated that the you of now is not the you of then.

I would hope most people believe in second chances and it seems you've taken yours and run with it quite nicely.

It sounds like you probably got mostly D's and C's then, in addition to the course you failed. This isn't a death sentence, but having a semester that is all C's and D's with an F thrown in is very different than just failing one course in the first semester and getting good grades in all the rest of the courses that semester. However, as I said, this is not a death sentence, so keep working.

That being said, there is no point in talking about your chances at this point because you have yet to take the MCAT. Study hard, take the MCAT, and then come back for advice and chances when you have your MCAT score.

Damn that is one messed up first semester, but med school is definitely still on the table with a strong MCAT score.
