Can anyone recommend a software package for conducting a meta analysis (preferably free, but commercial is okay too).

Check out David Wilson's webpage (http://mason.gmu.edu/~dwilsonb/ma.html) for an effect size calculator and meta-analysis macros for SAS, SPSS, and Stata. I second the above recommendation to read "Practical Meta-analysis"--I actually just finished it and found it incredibly useful to a first-timer at meta-analysis.

"Comprehensive Meta Analysis" was also recommended to me by multiple students in my program. It is a bit pricey, but seems very user-friendly. I have not tried it myself but here is the link, they have a free trial http://www.meta-analysis.com/.
