Hi Everyone,

I came across this site when I was trying to find out what is causing my illness. At first, my consultants thought I had diabetic acid., then they changed their minds and admitted me to the renal ward and said I had Renal Tubular acid. They've now ruled that out and are calling it metabolic acid. I live in Scotland and my docs. got permission from Guy's hospital in London, big teaching hospital, to give me ammonium chloride tabs. over a 10hr.period, taking hourly blood and urine samples. They had stabilised me and were trying to cause my acid. to kick in. However, this failed.

I am, at the moment, taking 3x4tbs.day, 500mgs.tabs. to prevent acids. I started off with one, but my body builds up a tolerance to them and I've to increase as I need to. I'm allowed a maximum 4x4daily and if my body gets used to them, I'll have to go back into the ward and go on a Sod.bicarb/Potassium drip. When I go home after my treatment, I'm usually back in again within 1/2 weeks. This has been going on all last year, before they let me have the tabs. and all I can see for the future is more of the same.

My Consultants, Dr. McGregor, and Dr. Velasco are world famous in dealing with this ilness and have been to America many times to deliver talks on the subject, but they've told me they're stumped with my problem. They told me there are 2 docs.who specialize in this in London and they will be sending me there, if I have to start going back in and out of the ward. I feel so bad, as I'm taking up beds that are needed for much more ill patients. They've also said, if they have to, they'll arrange for me to go to America for help if London can't find out the cause.

I've had every test known to them done, but every thing seems to be in working order. I would like to throw this problem open to anyone out there. I understand metabolic acidosis is more common in America, so therefore you must be more expert in treatin g it. I'm desparate for help and one idea I have is when I exercise, just going for a 1/2hr.walk or am rushing about, my Sod.Bic. drops very quickly. My docs, say that just shouldn't affect it, but I've tested myself and know this is so. I am a layman, or woman, in my case, so therefore presume you'll all think I don't really know what I'm talking about, but my GP. has come round to the exercise/stress idea and is going to keep an eye on me in the future, for example, if I go on a trip anywhere. I haven't been out of the country for 4yrs,and my husband wants to take me to New York in September, but is worried about my health.

Please don't write me off as not knowing what I'm talking about. I can read this illness like a book. I just want to know the cause of it.

Thanking you in anticipation
Annmarie.
