Metal properties

There is question in dat destroyer that asks which metal can react with HCl to give dark granular solid. The choices are Zn, Pt, Ag, Au, and S. The explanation says that Pt, Ag and Au are unreactive and s is not a metal.

How do you approach problems like these? Do you just memorize these properties of elements when you go through the destroyer book?
