I need some opinions on this. If I have a year before applying to pharm schools and I need to increase my GPA as much as possible during that one year, will it help if I begin taking a lot of classes which I will ace in? For example since im in the quarter system, what if I take 4-5 classes per quarter (16-20 units) and ace them all? The thing is I'll probably take 2-3 science courses along with either 2-3 humanities courses. Does it matter if the classes are irrelevant to prereq and I'm just taking it to boost my overall GPA? (language, simple science classes (astronomy, etc), research units)

Is that a good idea? Or will it be useless?

good idea. i did the same thing. 3-4 hard classes and 2 freaking easy classes.

It's possible as long as your not in my position with about 200 credit hours because beyond that, there is no hope.

If you are taking an upper division science class like molecular genetics and 3-4 "filler" classes like introduction to botany in the same semester this will probably raise some questions from the adcoms. They have been on our side of the fence and can probably can see through this kind of thing.

I think it's fine to take a bunch of classes to raise your gpa. If I were you, however, I would just be careful not to overload yourself. It could be very easy to spread yourself so thin that you end up doing poorly in your science courses which would defeat the purpose of you taking all those courses in the first place.

I managed to raise my GPA by taking several years of Chinese. It ended up having a pretty big impact, as well as taking some psych classes. These are part of my interest, though, so I think you should take classes that you are at least somewhat interested in. They might think its weird if you take a bunch of random easy classes to boost the GPA, but if you are taking classes out of interest and it happens to boost your GPA I think that is perfectly fine.

Yea, I am definately planning to take classes that im interested in. im already considering chinese as one. thanks for the help guys 🙂

Raising your science and cumulative GPA can be done by taking numerous filler and upper division classes. Do keep in mind that adcoms are probably most interested in the grades you obtained in your prerequisite courses for any particular school.

just outta curiosity, is there anyway to increase gpa by retaking a class? like retaking a class that you may have gotten a B or C in and try to get an A in that class.

some universities have academic forgiveness where u can retake courses u got a C- or below in. There are others that do grade averaging. My school had both academic forgiveness and grade averaging.

hmm i will have to figure that one out. theres a class where i have gotten B- in and i really regret not attempting anything in that class because it wouldve been an easy A lol

It might be more helpful if you actually told us what GPA you have and how much you want to raise the GPA. If you have a 3.5 and want to raise it to 3.8 you might be better off taking more difficult classes and raise it to a 3.7 as it may not be your GPA that is the problem but rather that you only taken the minimum and they don't see as much science and upperdivs in your transcripts. It wouldn't look good to do the bare minimum science prereq and fill the rest with fluff... also take into account science/math GPA as well not just overall GPA.

However if your GPA is below 3.0 you want to retake any science C's or below if you have any and not worry about trying to get an easy A for a class you got B- as the average will end up barely improving your GPA if you have Cs in other areas (assuming you have decent amount of credits). Even easy classes will take some time and effort, with a few more hours a day you can raise a C to A from an important course rather than taking the easy route the difference in what adcoms see might be from quick glance (a .0X rise in GPA) to something that catches their eye as it is a course they measure you against others.

You should probably ask adcoms about what classes you should take as some schools look at certain things more than others... i was told to retake part 2 of calculus because I got a C+ even though it was an engineering level calculus (which i should have just taken the biology major calculus) rather than a C in economics as they value science/math much more than econ. Some school also value physics highly while others dont even require it as a prereq.

my current gpa is a 3.4 and i have only gotten two C+ (one math one english) i got a C+ in Calc I but B+ in Calc II.

i aced ochem, A/B+ in gen chem, and A+/B in bio.

i understand now that i shouldnt take easy classes. i'll probably stick to 2-3 science classes, 1 humanities, and i'll probably take chinese too.
