I am assuming the majority of programs will notify you about interviews via email. Are there any programs that only use "regular" mail to do this? The reason I ask, is that I am going away for a month and will not have access to my mailbox and I can't forward my mail or have someone else pick it up for me. I just don't want to miss out on an interview opportunity because of this.

I would send an email to the programs you are applying to and let them know your situation, and that, if they want you for an interview, to make sure they send an email-invite.

I heard from 3-4 programs of my 17 by regular mail. If I remember, they were Vermont, Dartmouth, Rush, and Indiana.

I have heard stories of some programs sending out invites by phone call or, incredibly randomly, by paging you (U Maryland, not sure if they still do this).

But yes, if you are out of town and can't check your mail, I think it would be ok to call the contact person listed (or email) to find out more info. Just explain your situation. They will generally be honest and tell you "we haven't sent out invites yet" or "we haven't reviewed yours yet" or "we sent that out awhile back, we can tell you what it said."
