hello everyone,
I am currently planning on applying to both of these programs (marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling).

My question is if anyone has had experience in either of them and could maybe shed some light on which one would be more beneficial in pursuing a career in private practice?

Thanks in advance,
Nicole

It is a tought decision to make. 1st I would recommended looking at a few of the threads that have discussed private practice at the Masters level and review the info there.

My advice or take on it is this.

An MFT approaches things from a relationship specific focus particularly families and marriages. When working with an individual they are going to help the person conceptualize thier issues from relationship points of focus.

The MHC will have a broader scope in helping the client deal with thier problems. I tend to think that the MHC will allow a greater variety of job oppurtunities and working with a wider variety of client populations.

Regardless of which path you choose, both are rewarding and worthwhile in the services they provide. In fact many people hold dual license in both. Good luck with the decision.
