Greetings everyone,

I have been lurking on here for a while and decided to come out of hiding.
Firstly, I want to thank you for all the information about graduate programs in psychology, I have learned so much about the field from you. Secondly, I am writing because I need your help. After learning the differences between Phds and Psyds and MA/MHCs, I found this program at University of Connecticut and I don't know what to think about it. It's a Phd in Marriage and Family Therapy, accredited byCOAMFTE, in the Human Development and Family Studies program. They accept students who already have a MFT, and they also accept students who have only bachelors (or a general MA) – and this will be my case if I decide to apply.

I am very interested in doing therapy with families and couples, but I am also very attracted to research. My ideal job would probably combine both. That is why I though it would be a good idea to pursue a clinical psychology phd. However, I think this program might be a great match for me, but I just could not find any more information on it.

Can someone who knows more about this type of program tell me what kind of career paths I can take after graduation? How many applicants a program like this usually has/ or other admission data (such as GRE, GPA)? They don't seem to say anything about internships – are those not required? The website and the books I consulted do not have any kind of program data about it that I can use.

And the bigger question is, considering my interests (family/marriage therapy and research), what would be the difference between attending this program, or a clinical psych program that does research/practice in the same area?

I apologize for the long post. If you have personal experience with this program and don't want to post here, please PM me. I appreciate any kind of information. Good luck to all of you who are applying this season!

i know drexel has a phd in marriage and family therapy. you can check out their website and download the pdf brochure description of the program. i think on there they talk about job opportunities, salary, etc. obviously, with that degree, you can do research, teach, and do therapy. but i think if you had a clinical psych phd you would have more flexibility in terms of clinical work.
i know there are some psyd programs who have tracks in MFT, so i'm sure there are phd programs who also offer specialization in that, i just dont know of any...

Sorry moderator for the double post. Thank you lamorena, I'm going to look there.
