MGH, pitt

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Jake, I applied to Pitt (PTCAS app went in around late Aug/early Sept) and got accepted via email on November 19th. (However, I am not attending.)

I received an interview for MGH last week, but that was the first I'd heard from them since I applied.

What made you decide on Chatham over pitt?

A lot of factors that induced a ton of stress and crying... Haha.

(I know you know most of this, but I will recap in case someone else who isn't familiar with the schools wants more info)

Chatham is cheaper, slightly shorter in length and a smaller program. I feel as though I will be treated more like a person at Chatham rather than a # at Pitt.

Chatham really took the time to show they were interested in me by calling/sending multiple emails and letters. You'd figure Pitt is a big, rich school, and it couldn't even send me an official paper acceptance letter? That bothered me... especially when I got an email, a packet of information, 2 postcards, a Christmas card, and a personal phone call from Chatham.

I was told that there is still a good shot at getting a clinical rotation within UPMC somewhere, as well as a bunch of other places. I also am really interested in the problem-based learning approach versus traditional lecture. The anatomy is spread out over an entire semester, instead of crammed into a summer session. Shadyside is "quieter" and it will be easier for me to commute to Chatham and find parking, rather than always having to ride the bus/pay an arm & a leg for parking in Oakland. I also had a PT (who is very well-respected in Western PA and a family friend) encourage me to go to Chatham over Pitt (she sees working only within the UPMC network as a negative, although I don't agree with that).

And, when I visited Chatham I fell in love with the campus immediately, the students were all really nice and all the faculty I spoke with seemed very nice. So, for me, I think I made the right choice. Still hard to turn down Pitt, I've been really stressed out about it, but I feel confident I made the right decision for me.

And I appreciate your insight when I had asked you some questions awhile ago, so thanks! 🙂 🙂

Thanks for the response. It sounds like you put a lot of thought into this process and made a great decision. Congrats! I am looking forward to making a decision!

I heard by email late last week. Good luck!!

I am pretty sure Pitt has wrapped up acceptances. I got my letter Dec 3rd and they just had their "Preview Pitt" day for accepted applicants. Sorry if this is bad news. I could also be wrong about them being doing with acceptances.

I don't know for certain, but I doubt they're done (totally speculating here). Often people that have been accepted will hold out on whether to accept or not until after they've attended preview day, which is at least partially why they held the event much earlier this year. I know of acceptances going out as late as late-April in the past when spots were available.
