I am seriously considering Miami Children's Hospital for residency. I interviewed there and loved it. However I am a little worried about the program in general and not very confident in it compared to my other choices because I never rotated there as a student.

Does anyone have any opinon or information about Miami Children's Hospital?
Do you all think it is a good program? (Why/Why not?)

Part of the reasons why I am concerned is because of the large number of foreign medical grads in the program, while nothing against them in particular I have heard consistently that having a large number of FMGs in a program was a sign that the program was not very good. Does anyone have an opinon or this or information about it?? About 75% of the residents at Miami Childrens are FMGs which is significantly more than the other programs that I interviewed/rotated at.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is a difficult time right now for us trying to make a decision that will affect the next three years of our lives.
Thanks

What about cost of living in Miami? I've heard its muc more expensive to live there and of course as residents we aren't going to get paid much.

I interviewed there as well and REALLY wanted to like the program because I really would love to live in Miami. Here's my take on the program...yes I was worried about the FMGs as well...but I think part of the reason the PD takes so many of them is because of the diverse patient population seen at MCH as well as the large pop from latin america. I think in that case, it may help to have some FMGs..esp. if you look, most of them are from central and south america...being able to speak Spanish and understanding the cultural differences are a big plus to having them in the program. I thought about this a lot, and that part of the program doesn't really bother me too much...because even though they are FMGs, they still have a lot to contribute to the program, and may actually be of help to us other residents for the reasons listed earlier.

The thing that DOES bother me about the program is that I talked with several interns who were definitely NOT happy in the program and probably would not do it again. This is the FIRST and ONLY place that I have interviewed where there were residents who actually admitted that they were not happy in the program. They both complained of several things...which, after speaking with several other residents, definitely stand out as the programs major weaknesses. ONE, there are a LARGE number of private physicans who admit to the hospital and they do not round with the team...half the time, the residents are scrambling around trying to contact each of these physicians about their patients. They make up about 60-75% of the patient load. TWO, the volume is VERY VERY high...so high that residents have admitted that they can have 20-25 patients post call...and avg patient load is about 15. and LAST, the residents "work their a#ses off" (quote from an intern)...and they will admit to you that they do NOT have time to read at all the first year...even the PD admitted this to me during my interview. Anyways, those are several things that bother me...and the fact that more than 75% are spanish speaking and I don't speak spanish..i am just thinking about how crazy it is going to be post call with my 25 patients and trying to see all of them...and not being able to communicate with 20 of the 25...hmmm...I don't know...

But the program is overall very good...and you will definitely learn A LOT from all the patients that you will encounter. Yes the cost of living in Miami is kinda high, but most of the residents I talked with own a very nice loft/condo near the beach and they say that it is affordable...definitely better than Cali/east coast, I think.

If you have any other questions, please email me at [email protected] I also have an email with several questions emailed to one of the 2nd years there...I think he answered them pretty truthfully. I'll be happy to share..just don't want to take up any more room on this post.

Good luck!
