I don't want to be an alarmist, but I just realized that the Miami metro area is installing its 4th proton center.

1. Baptist Cancer Institute - IBA 3 room center in South Miami

2. Dwoskin center at Univ of Miami in central Miami - Varian compact gantry

3. SFPTI in Delray Beach- compact Varian single room center

4. Boca Raton - single room compact gantry from IBA, commissioning in 2025 with go live in 2026

That's 6 rooms within an hour's drive, in addition to the 6 rooms in Jacksonville, 2 in Orlando, 2 going into Tampa, and I am sure that I'm forgetting someone.

By comparison, the entire state of New York has 4 rooms in Harlem, and that's it.

Just like FL had 10+ cyberknife centers around the state after the turn of the century. Not many (any?) left now

Will be interesting to see how many of these proton centers actually make it

There are a lot of prostates to treat in Florida and there is maybe probably certainly a benefit to proton therapy that was shown that one time by that one proton guy.

Is this enough access? Recall that the centers that treat these poor patients also won't get the $500 travel bonus, proton therapy is too innovative and new to be included in ROCR.

I dunno, I might be alarmed.

Ok, I admit I used ChatGPT with this one with several inputs to get it just right, but I think this is a certifable bop.

To the tune of Will Smith's song "Miami"

Chorus:
Welcome to Miami, where dollars flow,
Four rad sites, making bank, you know.
Where profit meets science, it’s a slick show,
Radiation vibes, let the money grow.

Verse 1:
Yo, we got the first one, call it Proton Power,
Cash in on cancer, stacking up the tower.
Fighting prostate tumors? Yeah, that’s the theme,
In the Magic City, it’s a money-making dream.

Verse 2:
Next up, Fusion Station, don’t be naive,
They’re charging those bills, hoping you believe.
With fancy treatments, they’re raising the stakes,
All about the profit, make no mistake!

Chorus:
Welcome to Miami, where dollars flow,
Four rad sites, making bank, you know.
Where profit meets science, it’s a slick show,
Radiation vibes, let the money grow.

Verse 3:
Now we hit the third, it’s the Rad Lab Game,
Innovative methods, but who’s really to blame?
From cyclotrons buzzing to bills so tight,
They’re banking on your health, day and night.

Verse 4:
Last but not least, it’s the Proton Dome,
Where they’re cashing in, while you’re far from home.
Expert teams hustling, with their laser beams,
In Miami, baby, it’s a capital scheme!

Chorus:
Welcome to Miami, where dollars flow,
Four rad sites, making bank, you know.
Where profit meets science, it’s a slick show,
Radiation vibes, let the money grow.

Outro:
So if you’re in the city, come take a ride,
To the four facilities, where cash is the pride.
From the beach to the lab, it’s a profit scene,
In Miami, baby, it’s a money machine!

I wouldn't be surprised if South Florida ends up with several more proton gantries over the next few years.

I wonder if this is still being built.

And to think I was skeptical about the application of AI to RadOnc!

Yep, still being built in SW FLorida, looks like they broke ground on June 14, 2023:

I wonder how many units can be crammed into Jacksonville before the city starts to glow from Cerenkov radiation? There's only 1.35 million people in the Jacksonville metro area, whereas Miami - Ft Lauderdale - Pampano Beach at least has 6+ million.

Must be some kind of cancer cluster in Jacksonville:

Ackerman center - 1 Mevion unit, looks like a passive scatter nozzle - "the first and only privately owned cancer practice to offer proton therapy"

U of F Jacksonville - 5 rooms - 4 gantries and 1 fixed beam room:

Mayo Clinic Jacksonville - 2 proton gantries and one carbon ion room:
