I am still waiting on one decision that may change the game completely but I would like to hear people's input on whether my Pro/Con is leading me to the right choice.
Temple
Pros:
+ In philly, where I have lived for 4 years and have friends and SO family.
+ Closer to SO in Boston
+ Great clinical education + Narrative Medicine
+ Could continue my research at CHOP and I am interested in Pediatrics/Family Med/ or Internal Med/Peds thus this is a phenomenal instituion to continue at (but it is not affiliated with Temple)
+ Match well at CHOP because of Philly but otherwise not amazing (Not sure if this is pro or con)
+ I wouldn't have to move to a new city and could save money
+ Huge commitment to community service which is really important to me.
Cons:
- $54,000 IS tuition
- New curriculum, could be messy
- A lot of friends and my SO went here which could be a pro cause I could get advice but I kind of want to branch out and do my own thing
- Children's Hospital rotation isn't great and research isn't huge
- Lower rank
UMiami
Pros:
+ Cheaper tuition for two degrees in four years (48K)
+ 14 month pre-clinical (new curriculum but have started to change it over the years so not completely new)
+ Get both large class and small class feel due to MPH degree (58 students)
+ Great clinical rotations even with MPH in West Palm Beach County you get to work with attendings 1-1 and then I can come back to Miami and work with the Jackson Health system including the children's hospital.
+ Lots of opportunities for research
+ Amazing volunteer opportunities with DOCS
+ Amazing Global Health presence with Miami as a whole
+ Could learn Spanish
+ Warmer weather (I am from San Diego so I love this)
+ Higher rank
Cons:
- I have to take Biochem online now
- I have to move
- Further from SO (but still direct flight)
- Matches good in pediatrics but less name recognition in NE (I am not sure if this is a con because while I would love to return to CHOP for residency, I am also open to going to other institutions)
I am leaning towards UMiami because I have alwasy wanted an MPH degree and this seems like the perfect price for two degrees and it's an amazing institution. But Temple was my first acceptance and also where I am comfortable in terms of city/people. I move around a lot and don't have an issue starting over so it doesn't scare me, but med school is a whole new ball game that I know might be different. My heart is set on Miami but for some reason I am havign trouble withdrawing from Temple like I have not officially made up my mind. I would love input. Thank you!!
