Hey guys, I’m having some trouble choosing between Miami and Maryland and hoping someone could provide some insight!

Maryland

Pros
  • Higher ranked at #34 research, #12 primary care (may make a difference for residency programs with Step being Pass/Fail?)
  • Close to home
  • Great hospital with plenty of clinical opportunities
Cons
  • Not true pass/fail
  • Standard 2 years of pre-clinicals and no opportunities for longitudinal integrated clerkships
  • No student run health clinics in the city
  • Weather (meh Maryland isn’t that cold but it’s still cold in the winter)

  • Miami
    Pros
  • Really unique, exciting curriculum (NextGenMD) and it’s true pass/fail
  • Clinicals start year 2 with a longitudinally integrated clerkship model
  • I love how multicultural Miami is and think it’s a great place to practice medicine
  • Huge emphasis on public health with plenty of opportunities to work in student run clinics
  • 8k/ year cheaper with my scholarship
  • The weather is beautiful
Cons
  • Lower ranked than Maryland (#50 research, primary care #75)
  • The curriculum is only 1 year old so there might be some kinks to work out?
  • The admissions office has been really hard to reach this cycle so I don’t know if this may be a red flag about the administration?
Summary: Overall, I know I would be happy at both schools but Im leaning toward Miami. I guess my main worry is how much rankings/ prestige matter now with Step 1 Pass/Fail

I don’t think there is much of a prestige difference between these two. It sounds like Miami would be a better fit for you and it’s also cheaper.

Miami is a great school. Jackson Hospital / Health System provides a lot of opportunities. Cheaper, warmer, big student run clinic (Wolfson, I think). Maryland is graded all four years and also just updated curriculum this year. I'd go Miami, and as noted maybe a better fit for you.

Both are well regarded schools - no effective prestige difference. Go where you like it more.
