  1. Resident [Any Field]
Aw, Miami, we coulda been happy together...

The good news for Florida nontrads: U of Miami alleges to differentiate between your undergrad GPA and your postbac GPA:

"If you are a resident of Florida, you must have at least a 3.2 undergraduate GPA, or a post-bac or graduate GPA of at least 3.5 (for a minimum of 15 credits which must appear on your AMCAS application."

The bad news: for OOS, yikes!!!!!

"Non-Floridians must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.6. Post-bac and graduate GPAs are not considered for residents of other states."

I know that 3.6 is a reasonable expectation for OOS, but this is the first school I've seen that actually states a minimum.

They also say you should have a minimum MCAT of 30 or higher, resident or not. At least I got that part right. 🙂

Here's the new requirements page:

Yeah, I've seen OOSers with a 3.59 get the pre-secondary Miami rejection, while a 3.6 gets you the secondary. Also, they actually sent me the secondary based just on my gpa - I didn't even have an MCAT score back. So, apparently NO MCAT score is sufficient to get past that MCAT screen of 24. *shrug*

maybe u of miami made a mistake with me then...

overall 3.17, bcpm 3.37.

post bac 3.92 though, but i am totally oos (cali)

i got a secondary last night. weird huh? what do you guys think? mistake?

No. Miami is a screening school. They don't send people secondaries by mistake. 😉

Actually, someone posted in Pre-Allo that the MSAR shows that Miami doesn't screen. I looked it up in this year's MSAR too, and it appears that they're correct (although I could have sworn that last year's MSAR indicated that the did screen). Perhaps they just changed from screening to non-screening this year?

They still screen. I received an e-mail on 6/25 from them saying "a decision whether to invite me to complete their secondary application will be made soon." Two days ago, I got that invite.

I have a 3.56 cum and 30 MCAT and they sent me a secondary a couple of days ago also. maybe Im just on the border or something, but they definitely dont just SCREEN without looking at your app a little bit. I have a good GPA trend at a tough undergrad, so Im assuming thats why I got a secondary invite.

I am similar to aimaz88 in that my GPA is 3.16, but post-bac of 3.85 (55 units). I received the secondary a few days ago. I also looked in the MSAR and is says that secondaries are sent to all US citizens. Not sure if I am gonna complete the secondary based on the OP though...

Did you read the link you posted? Clearly Miami has recently changed its requirements and it appears now that they do NOT screen secondaries based on a minimum GPA (at least it no longer says anything about a 3.6 OOS min anymore as it did last year)...

From that page you cited:

"Requirements for receiving a supplemental application

The Miller School of Medicine has a new policy of sending secondary applications to all US citizens and permanent residents who submit an AMCAS application. It will be the applicant's decision whether to fill out the secondary application and submit it. In this regard, all applicants should remember that our last two entering classes had an average undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.7, a science GPA of 3.6, and an average MCAT composite score between 31 and 32. To be truly competitive potential applicants should have credentials comparable to those of our most recent classes. Supplemental applications received in the Office of Admissions after January 15th will not be processed."

So Miami is merely suggesting that applicants should consider their own competitiveness against the stats of the last 2 entering classes before submitting the secondary - i.e., "screen" yourself...

Then they changed it mid-application season. Because I read it when I was filling the Miami secondary out, and it definitely had the old message that OOS applicants needed a 3.6 or above. It also recommended a 30 or above for OOS students, but they sent me the secondary before I got my MCAT score back. My theory is that earlier in the season, they only sent the secondary to applicants who fit the "previous" gpa screen. Recently they must have changed their mind and become "non-screening" (whether it's just to get more secondary funds, or some other reason, I have no idea), and thus the secondary recently went out to all applicants.

I agree, I think they did change the website very recently, after the app cycle began, but I assume they have applied this standard to all applicants this season...frankly, they have done everyone a service in spelling it all out, putting the onus on applicants to decide if filling out the secondary (and spending $$$) is worthwhile...

I found this in Miami's FAQ. Nice:

"My GPA is good and my MCAT scores are competitive, but I am 45 years old. How does that affect my admissibility? First, it is illegal to base admissions decisions on age. Second, if anything, being an older (some people say non-traditional) applicant usually works to your advantage because, rightfully or wrongfully, admissions committees generally consider older applicants as having had more life experiences and therefore, more mature."
