Oh heavens, no. I don't like the Eagles. Why would I spend my hard earned pittance on a ticket to the Link? Blech. You sort of misread what I said. To me it's not just the Eagles fans, it's everyone. I get that the folks here love their sports, but too many of them have an odd way of showing their love and dealing with those of us who are not die hards. And I'm not talking about the elderly guy who I passed on the street last year when I was wearing my Giants sweatshirt and mumbled '&%=$#! Giants' as I passed even though he could barely walk and had to stop his forward momentum in order to catch enough breath to get that out. That made me smile.
I've been to sports venues in NJ, NY, Washington DC, Greeen Bay, Milwaukee, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Seattle. No, not everyone is well behaved. And yes, I've seen more than one ugly scene in other places. However, only in Philly have I been spit on and had my life threatened simply because I have the odassity to wear the opposition's jersey or appear to not be a die hard. Just this summer I had an incident at the ball park because I was wearing my Brewers cap. The guy who threatened to 'tear it from my head and burn it' failed to see I had my Cliff Lee shirt on. I didn't start the conversation nor did I instigate the individual. But when I asked why my hat was an issue when I had on a Phils shirt he tore into me complete with ugly euphemisms and something to the effect that if I didn't remove my cap that he would have to do so forcefully. I had to stop him by explaining that if he so much as tried, he'd need his buddies to carry him home because I would tie his balls in a knot after I kicked his teeth in. Seriously, I was minding my own business standing behind the first base line taking pictures during the first inning and this asshat comes over to start something? Sad on so many levels.
It wasn't the first time and I doubt it will be the last. I truly hate having to defend myself in rude/ugly ways. It ruins the experience. I love sports and understand having love for a team or a city's group of teams. I just wish the folks here could find better ways to do it. That's all.
I never stated that Philly was immune form such ugly behavior. I personally find anyone that takes recreational sporting events to such a pathetic level as a bit sociopathic and in need of some perspective. My point here was that Philly fans hardly have a monopoly on such behavior. And I can just as easily say that I have never heard of fans getting shot or beaten and critically injured outside of the Linc as has been documented at both Dodger Stadium and Candlestick Park in SF in just the past year or so. Way more barbaric than any of the classless shenanigans being credited to Philly fans, no?
Singling the city of Philadelphia out as "classless and crappy", as the poster here did is intellectually lazy and quite ridiculous. After all we're talking about millions of people, myself included.
