Interested in impressions regarding Michigans IMS style of teaching the core sciences vs. the standard separate course approach for biochem, histo, path, pharm, anat, physio, etc.

Mich has this IMS "Integrated Medical Systems" approach three years running now and says they copy this system from numerous medical schools.

A systems-based modular approach makes sense however I'm not convinced Michigan doesn't have the bugs worked out...only 3 years this curriculum has been managed this way there. I've heard both good and bad from Michigan students while at the interview this weekend.

Curious if others will share impressions regarding this, good, bad, negative, positive, all comments welcome...including if you think the standard separate courses approach works fine (or better.)

Thanks in advance,
CZ

i personally do not mind the IMS approach...one thing that i Do like is the fact that we have to study for only one Basic Sciences exam or quiz rather than multiple exams for various subjects...

A systems-based approach to learning the subjects as opposed to a separate course in anatomy and in physiology and in pathology etc, seems to work for a lot of ppl, but I think I would've been better off with separate courses.

I totally agree. It reduces the amount of exams you have to take and I like it becasue I only have one big basic science class to worry about. There are some problems with it but it is still better than stand alone courses I think, atleast for me.
