Hey guys, just need some advice.

I've already matched in a residency program in the Detroit area, so this question is more for my fiancee.

She's at an osteopathic school and her boards score are 221/89. I would love if she could get into a peds program in the Detroit area.

The question is she competitive enough for UoM's Ped program? If not, what are other good peds programs in the area? We've looked at Freida, but sometimes you don't know which programs are good for fellowship placement afterwards, etc.

Thanks!

Anyone? Please? 🙂

Hi!

I don't know much about UofM, but there are multiple programs in the area.

1. Children's Hospital of Michigan in downtown Detroit (in the Detroit Medical Center) has numerous Osteopaths as they seem to help residents fulfill the Osteopathic intern year requirements while still graduating within 3 years. Good program, busy, with lots of innercity pathology. Has appx 30 residents per year (incl med/peds), so big program.

2. St. John: Small program, lots of osteopaths because I believe they participate in Osteo match, and graduate you in 3 yrs while meeting intern year req's. Sadly, the program director is kinda odd and rubbed me the wrong way-- but don't take my word for it. It was my least fav program in metro Detroit. I think they take 6-8 residents per year.

3. Beaumont requires osteo residents to have intern year completed before application, so since this makes residency 4 years long, there aren't any osteopaths in the straight peds program. However, there are numerous in the Med/Peds program, because if its gonna take 4 years, you might as well get 2 board certs from it! This program is very friendly and comfortable. Happy residents. ***SEE UPDATE BELOW***

In addition there are multiple smaller community programs about an hour radius from Detroit: MSU Sparrow (East Lansing), Hurley (Flint), U of Toledo. Of course there is UofM, but that will seriously be the most competitive program in the state and I'm not sure about Osteo friendliness. All of the main 3 programs above will set you up for good fellowships, esp CHM and Beaumont. CHM has more inpatient focus, while Beaumont and St John have more balanced inpt/outpt focus.

Hope this helps! My husband is a osteopathic resident, so I know a little about the DO world, although I myself am at an allopathic school. Good Luck and congrats on your match!

UPDATE 2/18/2010: Beaumont has recently begun accommodating Osteopathic Residents so they do not need to have an osteo intern year completed to meet Michigan requirements. Contact the program for more details. Didn't want outdated information to persist. 🙂

About CHoM, do you know if residents get into fellowship from there?

I would encourage your fiancee to apply to UofM's peds program but be warned that there are currently no DOs residents. On my interview day there, I didn't see any osteopaths either, which isn't to say they don't interview DOs. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I wanted you and your fiancee to know all of the info that I know.

Best bet is to apply broadly and make sure your fiancee lets the PDs know of the situation and her intentions.

Good luck!

By now they've nearly completed residency.

Please look at the dates of posts before replying.

Thanks! I clicked on the wrong link.

I would def look at Childrens Hospital Detroit, Michigan State, and Toledo in Ohio but about 45 min south of Detroit.
