So I'm lucky enough to get invited for an interview at Michigan state, college of human medicine...

Here's the part in the email that bothers me:

This invitation means that you are eligible for direct admission into
the entering class of 2006. However, the Committee on Admissions wants
you to consider the following information when deciding whether to
attend Interview Day: Your academic record, including grade point
averages and MCAT scores, more closely coincides with that of applicants
recommended to the CHM postbaccalaureate program, the Advanced
Baccalaureate Learning Experience (ABLE), than for direct
admission. Accepting this invitation to interview means that you are
also amenable to being recommended to the ABLE Program. Students who
successfully complete the ABLE program are subsequently offered regular
admission to the College of Human Medicine.

So the question is: do i spend around $500 for travel/boarding?

I haven't had any acceptances yet, but i do have post-interview decisions pending at a couple of CA schools....

thanks

Are you an URM? I'm assuming, cause I thought ABLE was only for URMs.

Anyway, it depends on your willingness to pay out of state tuition. Personally, I think those post-bacc programs are a GREAT opportunity for people that may not have the numbers they are looking for.

If you work really hard and pass the requirements of the program, you're in. If that was offered to everyone, people would jump at those opportunities, I think.

i'm not urm (Asian Indian)
but i have applied disadvantaged...

so you would suggest going to the interview, even if i might just have a small chance for direct admission?

Sure, why not. I'd be open about ABLE also. The question for you is would you actually want to go there. If not, then don't bother with the interview.

But, to me, it seems like a sure bet in getting into med school.

My friend is currently in this program and is very happy. It's also reassuring for her to know that she has a direct admissions next year if she works hard. I think if you would be interested in the school you should definitely go check it out.

If you'd rather work hard and try again next year for a different school, don't go to the interview. If you are willing to pay $500 even if you don't get in (OOS is hard), the postbacc program may be worth it. How long is that, just one year, or two?

I'm a senior at MSU undergrad, and have some friends in MSU CHM and COM, if you have any questions.

Good luck!

That was my thought too. I may be totally off base, but it seems to me from the tone of the OP's posts that he isn't too interested in MSU-CHM, especially not in the ABLE program. If you really aren't interested in anything but an MD admission, you could always call the school and ask if you're really interviewing for a spot in the class, and what would have to happen on your interview day for that to happen. If there really is no chance of MD acceptance, and you aren't interested in the post-bacc program, then save your $$$ and don't go. If there is a decent chance and/or you are interested in the program, then go.

Actually, I really am interested in the ABLE program
I read a little bit about MSU CHM before applying, and i thought i fell right in line with their philosophy/mission.

I would love to go there...it's just that the only thing on my mind is $$
the other thing is that it's not as if i'm in a comfortable spot where i already have an acceptance, so i guess i should jump at any interview chance i can get...

btw, i couldn't find how much the ABLE program costs...any help on this one?

ALSO...TO the above poster (dajimmers) who goes to MSU undergrad., do you think it would be possible to find someone either in the med. school or undergrad. who'd be willing to host me for a night, max 2? I'd pay of course, but i think this would be cheaper than some of the hotels around campus...I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP - please let me know

i just emailed the adcom asking to interview on Thursday, Feb. 23rd...

Thanks guys

I went to MSU undergrad and I know 3 medical students who all live within 1/4 mile of the school. PM for details.

BTW, 2 of the guys live together and unless you're a hot chick it's a no go
