I am applying this June for MSU and am hoping to go there so I can stay with my significant other. I, however, am a California resident and saw that the class of 2009 was 93% in state residents. I had never heard that MSU was not oos friendly and am confused by this statistic. I know they have a huge oos tuition, but I just want to know my chances of getting in. I am moving there this summer so will have lived in michigan for a year before matriculating.

BTW I have a cGPA of 3.54 and a sGPA 3.7 and solid ec's.

It has been more out of state friendly in the recent class. My class is like 16% out of state students or something like that. I believe it is more out of state heavy in the 2015 class. Not a lot of out of state students go to MSUCOM because of the high out of state tuition. Im an out of state student. There are quite a few people in my class and the incoming class that are from California. You might want to verify with financial aid that if you reside in Michigan, preceding matriculation, that it will qualify you for in state tuition. I believe it is a year instate prior to starting med school, and you have to be working in the state. I can't remember the specifics, but I remember looking into this when I was applying.

It's OOS friendly in the sense that they accept OOS students (its a big class, 16% is like 50 students), but it is expensive. You have a good GPA so combine that with a decent MCAT and you'll probably be fine.

Thanks for the response! Can I ask you why you decided to go to MSUCOM and pay oos tuition? And do you have any plans for paying it off? I really like MSUCOM and am trying to decide if I can't get in state residency than do I want to pay that tuition.

If you look at his signature it says Air Force HPSP, which means the DoD is floating the bill on his tuition. He is getting the most money for his years of service, smart man if you ask me.

As the person above said, I getting my money's worth for the DOD via the Air Force HPSP. I know some people that are OOS that are not HPSP though. There are a ton of scholarships you can apply for once you are accepted, and before you start your first semester. Its on the main website, but ill be nice and give you the direct link to the scholarships, which is http://com.msu.edu/ss/scholarships.html . There is one specifically for OOS students, and can reduce the cost of attendance significantly. If you are interested in primary care as a specialty, you might look in the the National Health Service Corps.

The reason I chose MSU was based on the rotation sites and being a well established program. Also, Michigan has a lot of the AOA residency programs, and is extremely DO friendly. Also, I strongly considered it based on the recommendation of my 3 uncles and one of their partners in their practice. They are all orthopods, and the one partner went to MSUCOM. Im about 2/3 the way done with the last semester of my first year, and can say that I have no regrets. It a really good school, and has a lot of opportunities.

Good, I was gonna say, MSUCOM's tuition sure isn't OOS friendly.

Something like 25-30% of offers go out to OOS applicants. Last I heard about 60% of appliciants were OOS this year. So MSU is fairly OOS friendly with admissions offers but not OOS friendly with tutition rates - though the COA is not as bad as most people believe on here.

True, a good chunk of people get the OOS scholarship, which lowers tuition to only slightly above the average for DO schools.

With the state that Michigan is in now financially, they will be forced to accept out of state students because that equals more $$$ for the school. Detroit, for example, lost like a lot of their population since 2000...the state just lost representation in the government, a few seats on congress (or something like that).

They need all the OOS tuition they can get.

But traditionally, they have loved in-staters, of course.
