I have been accepted to both Michigan State and Rowan. I am having a hard time deciding between the two schools. I am OOS for both, but closer to Rowan since I’m in the Philly suburbs. I am seeing conflicting info on the tuition for MSU so I will be reaching out to get clarification since financials are very important to keep in mind. For MSU, I’ve seen that their NAVLE pass rate has significantly decreased and that they utilize a flipped classroom approach, which I have done before but am not the biggest fan of. On the other hand, Rowan is entirely new and I will be a part of their first ever class. I would really appreciate some advice.

With the caveat that I think cost is probably the more significant factor to consider…I’d choose the established school. Yes, a decreased NAVLE pass rate is something of concern and something to consider, but I would be more comfortable having faith that a school that used to have a good rate getting back to said good pass rate than I would being the guinea pig class for a brand new school that has no history to fall back on and just blindly hoping they do a good enough job to pass. I mean neither option is ideal but most likely either option will be fine. But I’d choose Michigan State if costs are comparable since it’s the established school.

Thanks! I did more searching, and I believe there may be a difference of ten grand in tuition, Michigan being the cheaper tuition option. However, I need to ask Rowan if there is the option of establishing residency.

Same. I would never choose a new program over an established one (with the exception of if the established one is in danger of terminal accreditation).

Hey! I live close to Rowan and chose to rescind my application once I’d been accepted to an established school. As others have said, I’d be hesitant going to a new program over an established one.

Ultimately, what one mentor said to me was “building a teaching hospital versus having a teaching hospital are two very different things,” especially considering the current climate, it may take quite a while before Rowan’s hospital/clinical opportunities are off the ground and functional.

Especially considering you’re OOS, I’d personally go to MSU, but I also don’t think you’d be wrong to go to Rowan- it’s just new and thus there are so many unknowns.
