Hello! Thanks a bunch for the advice. Did you just get into MSU recently? Did you make appointments to meet with head of admissions while on the waitlist? See, I had no idea that we could do that. I actually thought it was the opposite... that we had to wait until a final decision was made first. Otherwise, I would have really been on top of that. Oh well, nothing I can do now. I do plan on meeting with them still to get some confirmation about the way I'm structuring my back-up plan. Good luck at MSU, and congratulations! I'm glad some people still heard some good news. 🙂
Hey Misscutie
You seem like a great girl, really positive and upbeat and that's great! that's the attitude you should have when meeting with the advisor or head of admissions. That "I'm not discouraged about a one year set back I'm going to get into medical school!"
I'm not an expert but I would say going through the process with you and being on the waiting list and getting deferred to next year is all the experience I have. So I'm happy to share with you whatever I can. I had an amazing mentor that walked me through the red tape and told me what I needed to do. I'm just a average applicants not stellar grades weak mcat. But I compensated for all those things with volunteering, community involvement and research. I showed them being a doctor was all I wanted.
MSU is a very close nit school and they look for student that will suite them well. So the formula is the usual there are students with the higher grades, then there are the exceptions to the rules. People with personality. Show them yours. Remember to answer the big question "why do you want to be a doctor" and don't wait for them to ask you. Squeeze it in... like... "i love msu b/c....... and I know it's the school I want to attend... because I want to be this kinda doctor.... and I'm not going to give up" ...something like that. It sounds almost like beggin I know.
Yeah I asked for an interview while I was on the waiting list... I just said I know there's no movement and I need help setting plans for next year can I meet with Dr. Shafer to look over my file. And they were really nice about it. I think they like people to get involved in there progress not just to submit a file and keep calling until they get in. That's why prior to that I wrote letters updating my progress and show my commitment to medicine... (send cards...they go directly to the person... formal letters get shoved into your file... (thank them for everything the interview, thinking about you, just being alive! LOL kiddin)
I actually had a year off and I spent it working, traveling, finding unique volunteer opportunities. and I kept updating my file about things I was doing and how I wanted to go to MSU more than anything.
I think you should be fine, if MSU is your dream school like it was mine you will get in. Stick with it. I'm sure they'll tell you different things when they see your file. Really the things I had to do were actually easier than I thought, keep volunteering, take some post bacs (16) and MCAT (that's the hard one). After you meet with them you'll feel better, trust me. And who knows you might be entering with me for Aug 2007! hehehehe
