Hi everyone! I'm on the waitlist at Michigan State CHM, and I wanted to see if anyone else was in the same position and/or had any info. I honestly have no idea how things are proceeding with them since they seem firm about applicants not calling. I am going nuts 🙁

i am on the waitlist as well as an out-of-stater... i have just heard that a few people got off the waitlist when i called... i just call once in a while to see how things are progressing but doesnt look like much... and u seem like the only other person on SDN that is on the waitlist... so keep me updated if you hear anything... are u on any other waitlists or accepted anywhere?

I'm on the waitlist there as well. I have a feeling they don't rank the waitlist because they look for someone similar to the person that drops an acceptance for a replacement. This is a great policy for the school, not such a great policy for those of us anxiously waiting. I emailed the admissions office today to see if I would be penalized for reapplying while still on the waitlist, I have yet to hear back. Good luck to you both.

i wrote letter of interest...not loi since i sent an loi to jefferson... so it wouldnt be too nice of me if i do... but i do say that they are one of my top schools and i would love to attend but i guess they need the line, "if i am accepted at your school, i will definitely attend"

ask those students if they got in off the waitlist in june or july because i dont think writing loi at this point is gonna really do much

I think the fact that we said we still wanted to be in consideration when they sent that waitlist email should suffice, but I could be wrong.

I'm on this waitlist and one other. I haven't gotten in anywhere, and I heard that school isnt having much movement either. This is not fun 🙁

im on 3 other waitlists...3 unranked, 1 ranked (not great).... but im starting to lose hope and in a few weeks, its AMCAS 2007 time... the good thing about being on MSU's waitlist is that they start real late in aug 28th and who ever needed to drop and go to other schools did that already by that time

i'm on the waitlist as well...still waiting

I know they said to not call or email to ask about how things are going with the waitlist, but there can't be that many people even on it to be calling in right? I thought they only kept a certain number of people on the waitlist anyways. It's kind of unfair to not at least inform us periodically of what the situation is.

very unfair.... but they are the medical school... anyways they said some years all of the alternate list get in and some years only one person gets in... its basically a crap shoot... is it me or do the waitlists seem to be going really slow this year

It's not you, at least from what I've heard. A lot of waitlists are not moving, I guess there must have been a surplus of applicants this year. I know that MSU CHM typically doesn't even get 3000 applicants a year and they had over 3700 this year.

i agree with you. do you know how many people are on the waitlist? i would really appreciate knowing the number, but i feel like they leave us in the dark, despite how nice they are.

i am very frustrated about the surplus of applications as of late. i feel like i would have been in somewhere if this hadn't happened. 🙁

i think it depends on if you are out of state or instate because i think i place a quota on each... from the past, if u look at usnews, it doesnt seem like there are that many on the waitlist but i may be wrong

April 6th....how about yourself?

i emailed jay bride and this is what she wrote back: " There has been little
movement in the alternate pool. We cannot predict when spots will
become available. We will contact you as soon as there is a change in
your status. Best wishes. Jay Bryde"

not too good

do you think late interviews have anything to do with our waitlist status. i interviewed march 31st? i guess it doesn't really matter... it doesn't change our situation.

on the plus side, i know at least one student from the waitlist who got a rejection letter in may. they must have already weeded some people out.

has anyone even heard a peep from MSU-CHM? whats going on here?

nothing. but then again, only a limited number of sdners seem to be on the waitlist. im seriously giving up on these places. it's the end of june, and ive heard hardly anything.

I emailed them last week, and then resent the same email today, and I have yet to get a response. It was something along the lines of what I could do to strengthen my application in my year off. Hopefully the waitlist moves, but I doubt it.

This is my first post here but I have been keeping and eye on this one. Just wanted to give everyone a little hope here but I got in to State yesterday off the waitlist. I dont have any details on how much it is moving or how many they have taken but what I once thought wasnt going to happen did. Good luck to everyone else.

Thanx

This is a little off topic... but when did you guys first here from them with interview, etc. information last year? My status says that I am in preliminary review now.

for me, very very late. i sent in my secondary sometime in december because that's when they offered me one (they give you a 2 week time frame to complete it). i got offered an interview sometime in the beginning of march.

I know this is getting redundant, but I thought I'd see yet again if anyone has heard anything. I asked my adviser what she has heard about Michigan State. She talked to an admissions rep today, and all they told her is that they've taken a few people, that the people enrolled are required to attend pre-matriculation week starting Aug 19 if they want their spot, and that classes start Aug. 28. Im guessing they wont take people that late though since many med schools start before State. Ya, this is so frustrating. I'm really bummed since this school is my only option for this year now that I've found out that my other waitlist school is not going to happen 🙁

I'm being very redundant here and I don't care..has anybody heard anything from these guys??? Every time I call them they don't tell me jack

Yep. I heard from them today. They rejected me. I'm really bummed... But hey, at least I have an answer. Perhaps it's a good sign that you weren't rejected.

I'm really sorry to hear that..how did they tell you? Did you get an e-mail, or a letter in the mail?

ditto...reject email as well

E-mail telling me that my online status was changed to unsuccessful application. They did a poor job of writing that rejection letter actually. Regardless, I like how they handled it better than Wayne State. I was rejected from that school on August 1st, after orientation started, when they knew way before that that I wasn't going to be admitted to the school. They just held onto so many people on the list that they knew they weren't going to take. And I know it's not their problem, but I have been nervous about signing leases for housing in Chicago for a Masters program. At least now I can. Kind of sad, but not as bad since I had lost hope anyway.

Misscutie

I've been following your post for a while. I was on the waiting list too...
Whatever school you want to go to the most you should make an appointment with the head of admissions and show them that you love the school and why you should go there. They will tell you what you need to do after they go over your file ... i.e your letters sucked, or your interviews were great, or you need more research, or you just need to do more post-bac classes. I did that and they told me that I didn't need to take a masters. I just needed to take some more upper level science (16 credits perfered) to show them that I can pull higher grades. Sometimes just writing them every 3rd week and telling them what you're doing and how much you're looking forward to attending also helps. I did that all summer I kept updating my file. You should really talk to the school you want to go to and see what they want from you and do that, you might not even need a masters they might not even want that. You have a good MCAT and you might just want a higher gpa... (I don't know about your clinical or your research)... working is cool too that's what my student interviewer said about me....

Hello! Thanks a bunch for the advice. Did you just get into MSU recently? Did you make appointments to meet with head of admissions while on the waitlist? See, I had no idea that we could do that. I actually thought it was the opposite... that we had to wait until a final decision was made first. Otherwise, I would have really been on top of that. Oh well, nothing I can do now. I do plan on meeting with them still to get some confirmation about the way I'm structuring my back-up plan. Good luck at MSU, and congratulations! I'm glad some people still heard some good news. 🙂

Hey Misscutie

You seem like a great girl, really positive and upbeat and that's great! that's the attitude you should have when meeting with the advisor or head of admissions. That "I'm not discouraged about a one year set back I'm going to get into medical school!"

I'm not an expert but I would say going through the process with you and being on the waiting list and getting deferred to next year is all the experience I have. So I'm happy to share with you whatever I can. I had an amazing mentor that walked me through the red tape and told me what I needed to do. I'm just a average applicants not stellar grades weak mcat. But I compensated for all those things with volunteering, community involvement and research. I showed them being a doctor was all I wanted.

MSU is a very close nit school and they look for student that will suite them well. So the formula is the usual there are students with the higher grades, then there are the exceptions to the rules. People with personality. Show them yours. Remember to answer the big question "why do you want to be a doctor" and don't wait for them to ask you. Squeeze it in... like... "i love msu b/c....... and I know it's the school I want to attend... because I want to be this kinda doctor.... and I'm not going to give up" ...something like that. It sounds almost like beggin I know.

Yeah I asked for an interview while I was on the waiting list... I just said I know there's no movement and I need help setting plans for next year can I meet with Dr. Shafer to look over my file. And they were really nice about it. I think they like people to get involved in there progress not just to submit a file and keep calling until they get in. That's why prior to that I wrote letters updating my progress and show my commitment to medicine... (send cards...they go directly to the person... formal letters get shoved into your file... (thank them for everything the interview, thinking about you, just being alive! LOL kiddin)

I actually had a year off and I spent it working, traveling, finding unique volunteer opportunities. and I kept updating my file about things I was doing and how I wanted to go to MSU more than anything.

I think you should be fine, if MSU is your dream school like it was mine you will get in. Stick with it. I'm sure they'll tell you different things when they see your file. Really the things I had to do were actually easier than I thought, keep volunteering, take some post bacs (16) and MCAT (that's the hard one). After you meet with them you'll feel better, trust me. And who knows you might be entering with me for Aug 2007! hehehehe

Hey indy05. So you got in already for 2007? I was on the waitlist too and received a deferred acceptance after showing such strong interest in the school. MSU is my alma mater, and I'm really excited to be going back to East Lansing next fall. Hopefully I will see you all there.

oh cool! So you're one of the 10-12 Jay was talking about! Congrats! I look forward to burning the midnight oil with you~! LOL did you look at their schedule for this year yet? That's something to look forward to. My husband and I were looking for apartments today (early start) and wow the good ones are taken for next year already... if you have any suggestions let me know

seeya next fall!

Yea, I guess you were one of the 10-12 also! Haha. What's this midnight oil thing about? I'm not sure where my wife and I are going to live. We were thinking of the Holt area (they seem to have a number of decent houses for sale there). Yea, I looked at the class schedule. Doesn't seem so bad, I guess. Pretty consistent with other schools. My best friend is a second year right now at Wayne State and he agrees that it is somewhat similar. Also, one of my co-workers was accepted off MSU's waitlist for this year, so it will be nice to be able to talk with her about how her first year goes before starting our first year next year. Are we supposed to step up and start the official MSU entering '07 thread?

Oh you're going to buy a house? well I heard that for the 3-4yr rotations they might send you off somewhere else. I heard the grand rapids extention will be open and they'll pick people at random. I'm just going to rent it's only for two years who knows where they'll put me.

That's so cool you and your co-worker applied to medical school together. What do you do if you don't mind me asking. I know a few people who are interested in switching their careers and going into medicine. They're non-traditional. I guess I am too because I'll be a little older when I get in 26, but that's average for MSU.

I guess you can start a thread. I'm sure there will be a few people joining us soon.
