Mostly out here looking for opinions from current students as either school! I have not been able to get any gauge on student opinions of Michigan in particular. Hoping for some clarification on some of my assumptions below. Thinking of something surgical
Michigan:
Pros:
-much more prestigious and high PD ranking
-one year preclinical
-received a generous scholarship that makes COA very low
-left feeling very inspired that I would achieve my goals there
-clicked with students the most
-I am unsure what I want to do so more time to explore before making residency choice
Cons:
-the only thing I have heard about this school is that it is very very difficult. Getting honors is cut-throat and preclinical years is death
- Not really a diverse patient population, not sure if opportunities for working with underserved outside of "mentorship" is a thing (I would like to do more public health work with underserved population)
-cold cold winters
-I am moving from NYC so Ann Arbor is a small town for me
- Worried I won't fit in in the midwest because I have lived in big cities my entire life
-Did I mention the cold?
Miami
pros:
-where I am from so the support system is very strong
-I worked here at Jackson for several years so already have mentors, research opportunities and understand the culture and system
-The level 1 trauma center is an amazing experience
-Felt like you are extremely hands-on at Jackson during your clinical rotations
-Very strong in surgery but also have plenty of public health opportunities
-Probably nowhere has a more diverse patient population
-great weather
Cons:
-It felt so fratty on my interview day
-I really did not click with the students and felt like undergrad part 2
-not sure if I will regret turning down Michigan just to be close to family
-When I worked there, the environment did feel kind of toxic to me
Tbh, I am leaning Michigan. However, I find it weird that I never hear negative comments about Michigan. People at Miami were willing to admit some of their school's cons (which EVERY school has). To me, it is hard to accurately gauge the culture of Michigan so I can be certain I am making the right decision and not going in blind. I would really love to hear from current students and know what people think of either school from experience rather than just perceptions that one is better than the other!
