Hi, anyone know how the U Mich waitlist works?? I found out I'm in the "top tier", but no one in the admissions office is giving me a straight answer of what my real chances are of getting in. Pretty much depending on this one to go to med school.... help.....

Being in the top tier as well, I was curious. But all the admissions lady would tell me is to wait until May 15th when they will start pulling ppl off the waitlist. She did say the amount of ppl getting of waitlists varies from year to year so I'm crossing my fingers. U Mich is the best chance I got so far too...

I think that most years almost everyone in the first tier gets offered a spot if they still want it after May 15th. Sometimes it takes most of the summer to go through the list but they almost always take some people off the middle tier which would mean that the first tier people were all given a chance to go. So though it's not for sure, I think you guys can both breathe a little easier.

I'm pretty sure everyone (or nearly everyone) from the top tier gets in. I'm in the second tier and the secretary told me that I have a chances of getting in are "pretty good." She also told me that the waitlists are NOT all the same size. Obviously, the top two waitlists are a lot smaller than the third.

😕
i am also pretty confused about the U-Mich waiting list... the secretary told me that i was in the middle tier of the waiting list and that historically, they have taken students from all tiers (which doesn't make much sense to me). she also told me that they don't rank within each tier which also sounds a bit shady.

each year, about a third of their incoming class comes from the waiting list, which is good news. i'm in the middle tier and she said that my chances look promising.

but that doesn't tell us much now, does it?
😕 😕 😕

i guess all we can do is sit tight until May 15. best of luck!

for those of you on the UMich waitlist, i'm assuming you've been in contact with the admissions office. are you mainly speaking to the Director, Katie Horne, or to the Dean?

i'm not sure if it matters but i was just thinking.... any thoughts you have to share would me mucho appreciated.

don't the days in April seem to be passing at a painfully slow rate??

When I called in to find out my position, I talked to someone in the admissions office (I guess a secretary) that told me what tier I was in, and that there are 300 on the waitlist. Also, tier sizes are not equal (anyone know if the 1st tier is smaller or bigger???)

I e-mailed katie horne, and here's what she told me:

"When we start selecting people from the waitlist, we will start with the top third. As we get into summer, we will be looking to balance the class (male/female, Mich resident/nonresident, etc.) so some other factors, as well as availability of the applicant, come into play. In most years, we took almost everyone in the top third. We expect applicants to commit to a med school even while waiting on our list, because we just can't predict how many offers we will be able to make. The list is essentially set, however if you want to share anything additional with us it will be read and recorded before going into your file. Sometimes new information can be helpful to us as we are making choices. It is certainly not necessary however."

So, basically, i still don't know my chances..... gonna be a long couple of months.
😡

re: a long next couple weeks... no kidding!

thanks for sharing that information, cytanaka. i am also in touch with Katie Horne-- most of the M1s-M3s that i know at UMich said that Katie Horne is THE gatekeeper of the waitlist. what she says goes... have to draft my letter of intent soon. i already sent smthg similar in my thank you letter back in january--but i figure another letter can't hurt, right?

so i guess we'll wait with our fingers and toes crossed.
good luck to everyone!😀 😀

good luck to everyone on the waitlist! some info:

yes, katie horn is **the** person with whom to speak. i've found that she is very patient and helpful, too. 🙂

i know a couple of M2 and M3s there who tell me they were pulled off the waitlist. two of them were top tier (they say that almost every one from top tier gets pulled) and one of them was middle tier (she says she knew of a couple people pulled from middle tier). yes this is anecdotal evidence - just word of mouth from my friends - but i thought it may be helpful.

the tiers increase in size (# of people on them), top to bottom.

hope to see you all in the fall! 🙂

You think sending a letter of intent is going to help with the waitlist at mich? I'm not sure if the waitlists are tiered within each group, so if anyone's got some info on this, be much appreciated.

I know I'm obsessing over u mich, but this seems to be the only school with any interest in me....
