Anyone know if Mich has started accepting off their waitlist yet, or are they just waiting till May 15 to do some massive amounts of accepting?

I hope they start moving soon! The more the better for me because I am in the middle tier and they have got to go through the whole top to get to me! Good luck!

Are you staying in touch with the admissions committee? Your chances of getting off the waitlist are much better if you're proactive. About every 2-3 weeks, send them update letters on your current activities, new recommendation letters, more recent transcripts (if you've taken new courses since you applied), anything to let them know that you're still very interested in Michigan.

Best of luck getting off the waitlist!

i just spoke to April in the Admissions Office at Umich yesterday (yes, the desperation is definitely sinking in!)... she said not to expect any movement on the waiting list until after May 15. the waiting list will really start moving in the beginning of the June.

so it's really the same old story as other schools... does anyone know of others getting in off the waiting list at other schools yet?

best of luck to all of you! 😀 😀 😀

Hey, anyone hear anything about the waitlist at Umich? I saw someone on the 2003 waitlist thread got in on 5/20, but when Katie Horne e-mailed me on the 19th, she said they hadn't started looking at the waitlist yet? Is that waitlist post bogus or have they really started moving?
God, i hate waitlists.

oh, and does anyone have any idea how many openings they have so far for the waitlist? or any information at all about anything??

Thanks

when i called the office last week, they told me that they had started looking at the list and that they had only offered a "few" WLees positions. and from what i know, they were all in the top tier.

waitlist is my LEAST favorite word.

Letters of Intent work. esp for Michigan. If you know you want to go, keep showing interest. Spell it out... "If accepted to U of M, I guarantee to attend and drop my current acceptance." They look for these key words.

They typically rank you into three tiers. First tier and top of second have VERY good chances of getting in-- esp if you show continued interest-- though they do take from all three tiers.

Good luck!

thanks for the advice and words of encouragement!

question about LOI: i've already sent mine to Katie Horne in Admissions, back in Feb... is it okay to send an email or do they prefer a snail mailed copy?

at this point, i've written so many damn letters, they probably have all kinds of stuff from me.

thx in advance!

keep the faith everyone, it's almost June!! 😍

any good news out there?

i was reading posts from last year and there seemed to be a lot of movement around this time last year at UMich. people were getting in off the 2nd tier near the end of June, etc.

what's the good word, kids?
keep on truckin... 😉

I checked the Michigan faculty site for Katie Horne's email and luckily, she said she's on vacation this week.

So we can expect no phone calls until next week. Keeping fingers crossed.... no more waiting pleaaaaase

But waiting is SOOOOOO fun, right? Don't you guys love going to Best Buy the day after Thanksgiving? Really short lines are for wimps...

Of course I'm kidding.

but then again

Patience is a virtue!

Just wanted to share some info i got from katie horne when i e-mailed her last week:
She said they've already given 15 acceptances, and that they've already picked the next 20 that will get offers. She also said they're going at about 5-6 offers per week.

One wierd thing though, which is worrying the hell out of me: I'm in the top tier, and she said my odds of getting in are about 30-40%. I thought top tier was almost always getting in. This is after multiple loi's, updates, additional lor's, so i'm pretty confused.

Hopefully this wait will make an acceptance all the more sweet, like waiting for a x-mas gift... hope it's not coals in my stocking...
merry christmas everyone?

wow, Cytanaka! you got a good deal of information out of her.
thx for sharing! i wouldn't worry about her 30-40% comment... in her position, she probably has to keep the encouraging to a minimum. she probably doesn't want anyone to get their hopes up even if they have a fantastic shot of getting in.

if this makes you feel any better, at least she is responding to your emails... i had emailed her once on May 15 and another time on May 23, and got nothing. i just sent her another one today--but since she's out of town, i got in touch with April instead.

anyways--i was also told that they use the WL to "balance out" their class... meaning, if a non-resident female withdraws from UMich, they go to their WL to find the next non-res female. hence they don't necessarily go in a rank order.

i happen to be a non-resident female so i'm keeping my fingers crossed!

best of luck to you all!! let's keep this thread alive with new info!

CHEERS!!! it's another week of waiting!
Katie is back in town so let the calling begin....

how's everyone doing? any news?

I emailed her earlier today concerning the top tier waitlist movement. Her reply:

We have about 80 people on the top third of the waitlist now, so it's very hard to predict if we will be able to make offers to all these applicants. I suspect we will have at least 5 more openings, but beyond that I can't predict. I wish I had something more positive to report.

Damn! 80 people in the first tier! and only 5 spots... wow...

Well, on a side note, AMCAS is REALLY slow. They still have me holding at multiple schools when I withdrew from them over two weeks ago!

So perhaps there may be some hope.

I just wanted to say good luck to you guys! I was in your spot last year and I understand what you are going through. I got the ol' "it is still possible we could make you an acceptance and only you can decide how long you're willing to wait for one" vague replies from Katie Horne last year but it ended up working out well for me, because the very next day after I got the vague email from her, I got another email inviting me to join the class.

By about this time last year, they had taken about 30 people off the waitlist. So it seems like they are going at about the same pace if the info contained in the previous post was true. I also know that last year, they continued to give acceptances throughout the summer, because I have a friend that got in like a week before classes started.

Hang in there...and good luck to everyone! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions you think I might be able to help with.

Last year there were people that were accepted up until the day before or day of orientation.

Also, there could be people that they take off tier 2 before someone let's say bottom of tier 1 because of demographic reasons. Katie Horne told me last year that they take from all three tiers (10% from tier 3). Keep showing interest. Persistence pays off.

Regarding LOI, I wouldnt email it unless you are getting really close to orientation (ie-a week before orientation). When it gets this close, I would email the LOI, and just say that it is a friendly reminder that although you realize their class may be pretty set, you'd be willing to drop your current acceptance to attend U mich if a space becomes available.

Especially as it gets close to orientation, this is key. Lets say someone out of state drops or gets another offer a week before classes, they are really looking for people that are willing to pack up and join U of M. And they'd prefer an out of stater to fill this demographic. Id only email as it gets really close to orientation and I would cc the email to April. She is really nice.

The key is to keep showing interest without being obsessive!!
(a delicate balance!)
Good luck

rescued this thread from the back pages...
just wanted to bump this and see if anyone has recent updates to share.

hope all's well! 😎

I got THE CALL from Katie Horne almost exactly one month ago...funny thing is, I was waiting for my mom to call me back and I assumed it was her when I picked up my phone. I almost answered, "Yeah", but something stopped me and it's a good thing. When Katie Horne introduced herself, my heart stopped. I was driving and had to pull over. After I got my offer, I just cried (I'm a sap about this kind of stuff).

I hope other people have been able to share my good fortune; I know what it's like to sweat bullets. It's also good to know that other people have contacted Katie on several occasions...I had started to feel like I must have been annoying her.

If I could give any advice (I realize it's getting late), I'd say be creative with what you send to pad your file. I sent a copy of an award I'd just gotten from school, etc. I was told at my interview that "letters of recommendation carry a lot of weight here". I think it's not important WHO the letters are from, but how well the people know you. For example, I had a local doc who is a Michigan alum offer to write a letter for me, but I said no thanks because he didn't really know me very well. Instead, I sent letters from parents of my violin students, etc., because these people could write colorful letters that really painted a good picture of who I am.

Best of luck to all of you!
