Michigan, Wake and UW

What would be your least favorite place to live, Pacific Northwest, South, or Midwest?

That should be your answer 🙂

That's a really hard question. I can appreciate nearly anywhere, but I want unquestionably excellent training. I don't want anything left to chance on my rank list, and I hope to be in academics with no door closed to me as a result of where I did residency.

I also want to pursue a critical care fellowship. UW is an obvious good choice. I think I could enjoy each location for different reasons.

You will not meet a closed door with any of those. Why not go to all 3? No substitute to going there, I've been surprised both ways with several programs.

At the risk of sounding like a douche - i have more interviews than seems acceptable, and I wanted to cancel some of these. Cost also. However, my family and I are all for spending the money if it leads to a good future for my career and our life.

I've been blessed with good choices. I need to cancel if I am going to soon, but I am finding it hard to pull the trigger.

MIchigan has a highly respected chair and a solid CCM program. at least when i was there 4 years ago.

Thanks all. I will likely cancel UW for location reasons and yes - that did help!

I have heard Michigan has excellent critical care training in the program. Should I keep Wake? Anybody know much about it? Seems ridiculous to ask questions like to strangers on a messageboard, but I keep changing my mind. I really can't seem to decide what to do. It conflicts with a prelim interview I have, so I need to either cancel the prelim or cancel Wake.

Side question - anybody know what a safe number of prelim/TYs to rank if you are ranking advanced programs also? That might help me decide what to do also.

I wouldn't cancel an anesthesia interview for a pre-lim interview. Especially if the programs in question are UW or Wake Forest.

Seattle vs Ann Arbor vs Winston Salem....

I would cancel Wake....

You'll get a good education at any of those options but Winston Salem is a pit.....

Seattle- awesome city, great food and lots of outdoor options...

Ann Arbor is a lot of fun but it's small and beyond the University there isn't much to it....

But Winston Salem is the worldwide headquarters of Krispy Kreme....

As someone who has lived in Winston for the last five years (and am now an anesthesia resident here), I can assure you that Winston is not a "pit." Unless, if by pit, you mean the most affordable city in the country with a top 15 program, then yes, it's a pit.

Winston is NOT for everyone. If you are looking for a big city feel, it's not that. It never will be. Plenty of outdoors stuff to do. Charlotte is 1 hour away. Can go skiing or to the beech from Winston for a weekend. Smaller city, yes. I also own a 3BR, 2 bath house 1200 square feet with a yard and a garage (end of a cul-da-sac) for <$650 per month with ZERO down. Kind of tough to beat that anywhere else for the quality of training you would receive at Wake (doing a fellowship in regional, OB, or Neuro from Wake is a waste with the amount of experience you receive in those areas). The pain fellowshp is exceptional, and the peds and CT are getting stronger (and are already quite strong) every day.

Is there a heavy night-life/clubbing feel to Winston Salem? No. But if you want an affordable city with enough to do during your free time with exceptionally good training, then Winston might be a perfect fit.

IMHO.

I am not a resident at Wake, but I will also support Winston-Salem. If you have a family, it is a wonderful place to live. Great school system, easy living.

I second this statement. I am currently a critical care fellow at UM. I also did my training at UM for anesthesia. It still is a great program for anesthesia and critical care. FYI: all of the current critical care fellows (there are 6 in anesthesia) have jobs secured at the end of training with multiple offers. There are fellows in cardiac, peds and pain that have not found jobs. They will eventually get good jobs but I think it speaks to the demand for ICU trained anesthesiologists. PM me if you have specific questions about the program.

Yes Ann Arbor can be cold...like today but it is very livable city with a short commute and very family friendly. UW and Wake are also fantastic programs...I interviewed at both. You can't go wrong with any of the programs.

Yes - this is a weird combo.

I need to cancel at least one - if not two - of these. If you had to - how would you sort this out?

Academic career in mind here...

Not sure if you've made a decision, but I personally would love to go to Wake (and am on the wait list) so I vote that you cancel Wake. Overall though, you have 3 great programs to choose from. If you can't attend them all then go with your gut and do what you think is best. Good luck to you.
