I need some help here. My main micro studying is being done using mmrs and first aid, however, I'm finding that I am unable to resist the urge to go back and read some of my class notes on certain micro topics. To give an example-I went back to my class notes on influenza tonight and saw all sorts of crap that I COMPLETELY forgot. I found such juicy-tidbits on HA2 and how it comes about b/c of a protease that only exists within the superficial epithelial cells of the resp. tract...yadayadayada.... I'm noticing that lots of minutae that is in my class notes is not in mmrs :scared:

My question is- Am I out of control? I believe that I am, since I'll very likely forget all about these fascinating intracacies by the time step one rolls around for me. At the same time, I'm afraid that mmrs and first aid won't be enough. I'm only looking to hit the mean on this freakin' test.....Please help :scared:

One more question.... Why is hyperuricemia a risk factor (albeit minor) for atherosclerosis? Saw this in BRS, never heard of such a thing, and am unable to make this connection (maybe due to my biochem background sucking majory monkey butt 😕 ).

Hey, Daisygirl:

I've noticed that most of my class notes are much more detail-oriented than FA and even BRS. I think they overteach us--which is probably a good thing. From what I've heard, though, the USMLE will not go into as much detail.

I take my test tomorrow, and I don't feel ready at all. I think it's a common feeling. :scared:

As far as the hyperuricemia/atherosclerosis link, that's a new one for me, too. I couldn't find anything about it in Robbins.

Try and relax--I lost some sleep last night thinking about this damn exam; hopefully tonight will be better.

Good luck Brian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kick step one's butt :meanie: .

You are probably right that they overteach us and I guess that is a good thing, but I'm still nervous since I don't remember much of what I was overtaught :scared: . I guess I'm really scared that when test day rolls around, I'm going to be sitting in my chair, cursing at myself about how I should have a better brain. My brain must look like swiss cheese- everything passes out as quickly as it goes in :scared: .

Good luck, and please ignore my ranting. Here are some good luck vibes- :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Another person who gets up at the crack of dawn!! 😀

Yeah, I figure no matter how much I study for this thing, I'll never feel ready for it. I have to look over Behavioral today (Positive predictive value?? What's that??), but I guess that's it. I'll let you know what my experience was like.

Thanks for the vibes! Back at ya: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

While I am not one of the chosen few I will attempt to answer your question anyhow. I took the boards already and I can say that MMRS and 1st Aid are plenty for Micro. I often felt the same urges as you to go and read my incredibly detailed (and boring) class notes. Perhaps the mental approach you should take is that if it isnt in those two sources you shouldnt worry about it. IMHO, if you are only shooting for the mean then this is more than enough. My experience is that maybe there are 1 or 2 questions on Micro that wont be covered but I think all my Micro was captured in these sources (did I already say that?)

I would refrain from going back to class notes unless there is something you dont understand from MMRS or 1st Aid and not to go back looking for more detail.

I think you are fine and shouldn't worry about it. I got some questions that asked that level of detail, but the great thing is the answers were 5 totally different things, so if I had some idea what was going on, I was able to get the question without a problem. I wouldn't study your class notes to much more. I think it could get you one more question that you wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Don't worry about it.

Also, BRS had a bunch of little facts which I never saw on the test. Don't worry about trying to memorize them all.

Yea, I agree w/ Jalby.

The test almost always tests CONCEPTS and saves the nitpicky details for medical school course exams.

Well, it may be an indirect risk factor. It has been reported that hyperuricemia may be a compensatory response in non-late stage atherosclerosis. I dont have the article handy, but you could probably MEDLINE it. Certainly not on Step 1.

Just relax. This, too, shall pass.

Just because it may not have been said enough, pure micro was about 5 questions on my test. Nothing more complex than knowing viral structure (1 question) or knowing disease relationships.

Thanks everyone. I'll be able to resist that urge now 😀 .

Ectopic Fetus- I did say anyone too in the title of my post thread. Thanks so much for your help too. I think the anxiety was getting to me last night (hence the title of the thread) 😳

Why do I always seem to have the harder questions than Idio 😀 . For the record, I had harder "disease relationship" questions, but I would still use nothing beyond mmrs for studying if I had to do it all over again. Good luck!

I wish half my test would have been micro...after prepping for the COMLEX, I was ready for all the bugs.
