Would first aid and clinical micro made ridiculously simple be enough to know everything for the micro section of the boards? First aid definitely seems to lack a lot of bugs, as well as testable details (diarrhea type stuff, etc).

Is CMMRS enough to supplement it? What about adding the lipponcott microcards?

my friends who have taken the exam say that FA is enough if you're running out of time, but if you supplement it with CMMRS you'll be golden. For the most part, micro is pretty straightforward on the test so you don't wanna miss easy points by not reading it enough and getting them wrong. If you read those two sources, you'll be fine. that's all that my friends read for it and they aced those q's on the exam.

FA and CMMRS would definitely be enough. MicroCards are also really good but you probably don't need both. Micro cards are good for learning in a flash card format (obviously) whereas the main advantage of CMMRS besides the pics and mneumonics is that it's good for the drugs.

I loved Microcards, but I used them back in September to memorize all the bugs cold. For Step 1 preparation, I imagine you might be better off using 2 days to thoroughly go thru CMMRS and FA instead. Microcards 4-6 weeks before Step 1 might be too much, and possibly lacking other general principles.

I'm on my 2nd day of reading CMMRS right now.

While doing Uworld I've still come across some questions that couldn't be answered between FA and CMMRS, so I was a bit worried.

Good to know you all think CMMRS and FA will be enough!

How much are you guys learning about the worms? I'm tempted to just blow off that chapter, but i don't want it to come back and get me..

I drew a line back in the fall and during early Step 1 review. For the worms, I make sure I know:

-- How they enter your body
-- Where in your body they go to / cause pathology
-- Methods for diagnosis
-- Pharm (which can be basically grouped into a few categories)

Hope this helps

I initially started reading CMMRS (planned on finishing it in 2 days) but realized it has just way too much material. Is it enough to just read through the charts?? So far, I've only read 1/4 of the book (this is end of day 1) and even then, its questionable how much I still remember. 😕

I only read FA for micro and felt it was enough for the UW questions. I averaged around a 65-70% on them. MedEssentials has a couple of nice tables. It was enough for me but may not be for everyone.

I should mention I read CMMRS during our class, but it was during 1st year. Not sure how much stuck except for some of the images.

I thought that the Kaplan micro book (part of the seven-book lecture note set) was much better than CMMRS for learning symptom profiles and current drugs.

I used both Kaplan and CMMRS to annotate my FA during my earlier micro review to see if one had points the other missed, but ended up ditching CMMRS because the Kaplan book had more testable facts (like the Pseudomonas-diptheria toxin similarity). I think FA is fine if you're shooting for 60-70% on that section.

I've been scoring around 80-90% in both major Qbanks on micro questions, and doing pretty well on the micro band of the NBME, so I think it paid off to go through the Kaplan book. I'm hoping that it'll balance out my weak spots if I can't fix them in time.

can anyone comment on how well micro is for the home-study set?
