I've never took Microbiology or Anatomy while an undergrad, and they are both recommended courses by UOP. I had planned to quit my job and take the classes at a JC next semester. However, I've been told by some friends that just graduated from UOP that it won't help, and that I should just relax for the next 6 months. Whether I take the classes or not won't affect my acceptance.

Anyone have a take on this? Do you think micro and anatomy help prepare you better for your d1 courses? I'm sure the classes won't hurt, and I hate my job and was all ready to quit next week, but if its not worth it, I guess I could tough it out a couple more months.

crazy_sherm, I'm in the same shoes.

During my interview at both Case and NYU, I was advised to take Anatomy/Physiology prior going to a dental school. Any thoughts? 😕

Micro, Anatomy, Physiology, etc., will all be helpful when it comes to dental coursework, but they won't give you an automatic A.

I believe that you can still do very well in your courses without having had those classes, but you will probably have to study harder than those who have taken those classes.

So, are they beneficial? Yes, absolutely (to some degrees more than others depending on the school/curriculum).

Will you likely fail if you don't take them? No, but be prepared to study a bit more than your other classmates, depending on how difficult and new you find the material.

microbiology you can learn easily on your own. no need for a class. you'll be required to memorize a whole crapload of bacteria and viruses, and their characteristics. it's very straightforward.

anatomy is not worth taking unless it is with gross anatomy lab. if you can't take it with a lab component, dont' bother. however, regardless, memorize the cranial nerves (1 thru 12) before school starts. what are their names, what are their functional components (visceral, somatic, etc.) and what do they innervate (what are their branches).

Unless you really struggle in the biological sciences, I think you should relax and make the most of your free time while you still have it...especially with a 3 year program ahead of you. If you're like me, you'll probably forget everything right away anyways so save your money and live it up before you have to serve your time. Love the yellow wagon BTW. Done anything to it?

The thing is, if I don't try to take some classes, I'll feel guilty about bumming around not working. I'm really sick of my job and was hoping to work part time doing something more fun. I have a couple more weeks to think about it...

btw, I have a yellow wagon, but the one in my avatar was from some other website. I don't have a good pic of mine. Mine is all stock except for a prodrive axleback, whiteline rear sway, kartboy endlinks, and a short throw. You have a scooby? Sounds like you do from your handle...don't know too many other H4 makers out there.

Just study on your own, why would you risk entering a class at this point?

I thought about studying on my own, but wouldn't lab and regular tests help me learn the material better? At least help keep me on track from wanting slack off as much? Also, what risk are you talking about? Failing? Getting a C? I'll probably just take the class pass/fail. I think if I fail in the class, I probably don't belong in dental school anyway then.

So it sounds like you're MORE concerned with keeping yourself busy than getting something out of the course. I still say get a better part time job and party the rest of your time like there's no tommorow. That way, you get paid and you get to have fun. Or...you can pay someone so you can be stressed out...something you're going to be doing for the next few years anyways, why get a head start. Plus you're probably going to forget everything anyway by the time dental classes starts. But again, this is just my opinion and you should take everything you get here with a grain of salt.

And yes, I have a stage II scoob and working on it is the only thing besides my fiance that's keeping me sane thru dental school. Great choice in axleback BTW. I got one mated to a TXS Stealthback 😉
