Ok so here is my FIRST question EVER...

I am an undergrad at UCSD...human bio major...and I am registering for my next quarter classes. I have already taken all the chem,Ochem, year of bio w/lab, year of calc. , statistics, biochem, (I think that is all they want) and have a question about bactiriology w/lab and mam phis. w/lab.

My gpa is not excellent...about 3.3 at its best. I wanted to apply for 2007 and I was wondering if I should spend my next quarter (spring 06) highering my GPA by taking easier courses (just upper divisions for my bio major that are a bit easier) and raising my gpa...or should i take mam phys and bactiology along with their labs and probalby with the chance of getting B's and lowering my gpa.

I hope my question is clear...I am a junior, and if i want to apply in september, my gpa at that point will only include spring 06 and maybe summer (but i have nothing I need to take during summer). so should i go with bactioroly and mam phys w/labs to impress them by being done with ALL pre-recs...or should i leave all that for the end, after accptace...and just take whatever i KNOW i can get an A in.

thanks...please help...

Since bacteriology isn't necessary, maybe take the phys class and some classes that you can get an A in to raise your GPA. You don't want to take to many hard classes because you need to study for the OAT and do well in it.

for some school, u do need either microbiology or bacteriology.

ICO requires microbiology

I think all three of the schools I applied at needed microbiology. What I would suggest is raising your GPA if all your pre-req courses are over the minium required. Take whatever you need to finish your degree... Im not sure how the system works from where your at, but I know for my school they offer summer courses like micro or bacteriology which tend to be easier than taking it regular school. Im not sure if your curved either, but the summer alteast here the cruve more or less plays in your favour.

Your gpa isnt bad at all 3.3 is about average or even higher than average for most chools, but if your looking to apply next year it obviously wouldnt hurt to take classes which will make your GPA higher, it is a selling pnt to accept you. Thats basically what my goal would be for next year as well, im in my 3rd year and if im not accept this year I'll focus on taking easier coures next year to raise my gpa.

so I do need to eventually take bactiriology with lab and mam phys with lab...

my question is should i wait until after my interview to take it...since it is not an easy A...and until then take easier upper div. bio classes (if i can find any)...

it sounds as tough you are all suggesting i do that...the only thing is that, i was thinking they will like me more at my interview IF I have already completed all my pre-recs...

so a bit higher GPA? or COMPLETLY DONE WITH ALL pre-recs at the TIME OF INTERVIEW...which is better?

thanks for helping me out...

That is a good question, I had an interview for ICO with out having all my pre-reqs done but I didnt get one for UMSL or SCO until after fall term... which could also be because I didnt complete my application until mid-jan. If you can I would try to maybe take it during summer, I dont know if your allowed to do that, then boost your GPA. If not then take it during the year, and just make sure the rest of your courses arent to hard.

It's been my experience that the UC's are looked upon as highly prestigious, and that the schools take that into consideration when looking at the gpa. I know this because they've actually straight out and told me this. I wouldn't worry. Mine is less than yours and I've been interviewed and accepted to multiple schools. I didn't finish all of the pre-reqs, graduated, and am now taking a couple. And, you always have the OAT to give yourself a boost to make up for anything that your gpa may be lacking. A lot of the schools can give you a provisional acceptance, meaning that they will accept you if you make good on your promise to fulfill the pre-reqs. I would do whatever is most convenient for you timing-wise (ie, don't overburden yourself, don't delay graduation, etc. just to finish the pre-reqs.)
