So I'm trying to shop for books to get them on the cheap online but I am confused about what I should get for microbio. I know that the "made ridiculously simple" book is supposed to be great but upperclassmen at my school have told us we need a book that covers immuno in addition. They recommended the HY book but I've seen some not so enthusiastic reviews of it. I'm contemplating doing the Rapid Review book instead. I'm also intrigued by the Recall book that looks like it might have some great review questions in it. Any advice is appreciated. Thx.

Have you had any immunology before in undergraduate or first year? Is this going to be a class about immune system pathology (autoimmune, immune deficiencies, organ transplants) or include basic science immunology?

I haven't had any immuno except what we covered in histology first year which was just about cell types and the lymphatic system. The title of the second year course is "microbiology, immunology and parasitology".

I would suggest you get the Clinical Micro made Easy bc it is a great book that provide great detail. For immuno I would suggest getting the book recommended by your school.

There's also Lange Microbiology and Immunology. I used that for micro class and the immuno part to study for boards. They have great summaries of bugs too that I reviewed while studying for boards because Clinical Micro Ridiculously Simple wasn't enough detail for me.

Lange's also got lots of practice questions.

I am M2 and not doing well in my microbiology course, any suggestions. I did not find the Clinical Micro made Rdiciously Simple helpfull. Also any sugesstions for books with clinical cases.

CMMRS sucks as a primary text. I also liked Lange Micro and Immuno book by Levinson.

Also, if you need immunology text, I found that The Immune System by Parham is great, especially if you haven't had any background in immuno. I think it's written is a very simple language, is relatively concise, and covers all of the major topics like complement, antibodies, etc.

In my school, we use Medical Microbiology by Murray et al. for microbiology. I haven't used it so far, but take a look at it - maybe it's something you can use.

Another vote for Lange Micro and Immuno book by Levinson. The Rapid Review is quite good also, but is fairly bare bones compared to Levinson. I don't get the hype about MMRS - while some of the mnemonics are good, overall I don't find it too helpful.

Medical Microbiology by Murray divides chapters by species of microbe.

Medical Microbiology by Mims divides chapters by clinical condition.

Completely agree. I only wish I had come across the Lange book before board study--by far the best source of clear, relevant info for immuno and micro for classes and boards. MMRS had some mnemonics I can't get out of my head, but Lange is waaaay better.

You are alll are right. After I did bad in my first exam now I am spending more time in Lange Mirco. The Clinical Made Ridicoulsy Simple book has great nemonics but it is really short in a lot of information. My mistake was that I used it as a primary text when studying for my first exam, and that was a disaster. Alot of the information I was asked had no asnwer in that book.

I also got the Medical Microbiology by Murry it a bit tooo detailed. I think for my next exam I am sticking with Lange Medical Microbiology and Immuno, i like it better.

Thanks aloot for all ur feedback.

I agree that Lange is excellent. It's not too detailed and summarizes main concepts well. I had already taken 1 year of immunology prior to med school and thought that this book was great.

Hey . I am very nervous about take a shelf microbiology exam in 10 days,
