Brucella is non-motile , non-spore forming gram -ve coccobacilli ------agreed
my question is------is it facultative or obligate aerobe ?
two books state differently, i tried wikipedia......and thats not clearly stating
which one to follow ?

can somebody please clarify and also quote the source where its provided .

According to my knowledge, Brucella is obligate aerobe ( according to my text book )

Brucella spp. are small, Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming rods, which function as facultative intracellular parasites that cause chronic disease

Thanks to you all for taking time to share .
I guess, we'd rather follow what NBDE requires us to know than quote our books. BTW
@bddsgirl , whats your reference ? and please confirm frm any source
@mathew1919 , whats your reference? and confirm the source too
anybody else, who has been through the exam, can you please suggest......is first aid reliable over kaplan ?
@dentistjpr, i agree most of us do a lot of wikipedia studying......but do we take that as final ? I dont doubt , but curious !!!!

in case of doubt , which one should we hold on to ?

personally i always compare wiki with whatever book i am reading...in my case first aid, if they match its positively right if they do not i consult kaplan and and that serves as verification as to which one of them is right. For most part i find wiki as a reliable source. Or else do some google searches and try looking for answers there and if nothing works i ask our friends at SDN🙂

Wikipedia does not specify if Brucella is aerobe or facultative. But according to my book Textbook Of Microbiology by Ananthnarayan, Brucella is an obligate aerobe

Thats what i mentioned at the beginning of the thread about wiki, not mentioning it clearly .
I knew it as obligate though until First Aid said otherwise.

parvo is ---------------------> single starnded dna ; )

thanks pb2007 n wadent
can u please explain this

am quoting "All DNA viruses have double stranded dna except Parvovirus(ss);Hepadnavirus has ss regions in DNA "

Q .All DNA viruses are double stranded except :
hepadna virus
parvo virus

Ans :T/F ?

according to Kaplan Usmle, Brucella is small gram-negative rod, aerobic, facultative intracellular. Also Kaplan Usmle says that Brucella is fastidious organism and it requires cysteine for growth.( Francisella, Brucella, Legionella, Pasteurella all require cysteine for growth). So probably(my guess), it prefers oxygen but if oxygen is not available, it can respire anaerobically, that means that it will use an alternate electron acceptor, like nitrate or fumarate. So Brucella is aerobe, but not obligate(strict) aerob.
according to Kaplan Usmle, parvovirus has single stranded DNA and hepadnavirus has partially single stranded DNA

Now I am really confused because Murray's Medical Microbiology says that Brucella is strictly aerobic, with some strains requiring supplemental carbon dioxide for growth and it does not ferment carbohydrates. But hey guys, how many questions can we have on Brucella. I think it is really low yied. So I think we should let it be.

thanks raluca for such high yield info, i agree to the number of questions coming on brucella ideology.......howe'er jus to let u know, i hav long settled for brucella as facultative, so we can focus on better micro questions.

if anybody has any micro-patho questions, lets share and shoot those questions.....and help each other revise them over and over .
