I am ready this book "Brock Biology of Microorganisms" for my class next semester. The authors mention so many new topics and terms like I am supposed to know them... in every paragraph there is so much important information. I am very studious but eventually it gets to the point where I get too frustrated and drop the book for the day. Anyone else have these problems with this book? How did you study from it?

Though I did not use this text I have taken microbiology before. The text I used is just like what you described, a lot of new information/terms and just very detail in general. I must say a lot of it I didn't have to learn. My professor was also nice enough to provide reading guides for each unit, so I could study exactly what was required. Also try studying material from the text side by side with power points and notes from class. This way you can see what is really 'important.' Also, talk to the professor.

I used that book this past semester for my micro class. Brock is all over the place in his book, if you start from the beginning and try to read from cover to cover, you will not get it.

My advice is to wait until the first day and follow the way the professor is going through the chapters.

However I remember that chapter 3 has some review material in it (macromolecules, simple processes, etc..) that may be worth a little review.

The advice given here is good; wait for the professor's style and see if he puts out notes/ppts/outlines/whatev which select information from all the things the book presents.

I had Brock two semesters ago; it was hard due to the amount of material, but not impossible when taken piecemeal in tests.

I used that same book. My professor gave us slides with condensed information of what to know. I ended up getting an A in the class.

Yea that was the easiest chapter I read.

Problem is my proffesor next semester loves the book and asks specific details from it on his exams. I hope he will give condensed notes. I was reading about the text and it said the authors tried to make a combination of an introductory and a graduate level book. That just doesn't work well IMO.
Thanks for the advice, I'll stop reading for now and wait.

Just wait until medical school. I feel like I learn 100 different terms a day, non of which will ever be tested, but all of which are important to understand the material.
