For my winter quarter, I am looking to fulfill my microbiology requirement, problem is the introductory microbiology class is only offered in the fall and spring. At the moment I am looking to take the Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics 102 class (MIMG 102)- Introduction to Virology, but I am not sure it will fulfill that requirement. I figure that because the class is offered by the microbiology department, it should be fine, but does anyone know if the requirement must be satisfied by an introductory microbio class? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on the school, I guess. A 100-level class doesn't seem to me like it would satisfy as a micro pre-req? At Ohio State the required Micro class is a 500-level class, Micro 509 to be exact. I'd probably get into contact with the schools you're interested in to see what would fufill your requirement.

There are a lot of schools that offer the lecture portion of Micro online but I don't know of any that offer the lab. NC State has 2 online Microbiology courses that count towards their requirements but they don't offer the lab online. Good luck!

That's not necessarily true. It depends on her school's numbering system. My undergrad, for instance, had lower division classes from 1-99, upper division from 100-199 and anything higher than that was graduate. Definitely contact the schools, or see if you can find the micro class for their undergrad programs that would be used for the requirement and look at the course description.

I would definitely contact the schools that you're applying to/interested in. But... virology isn't microbiology (100-level course or not), and like twelvetigers I can't see it fulfilling the requirement.

Not a good assumption, IMO. Different schools will have different departments that offer equivalent courses, so content is what determines whether a given course will fulfill a prerequisite.

Depends on the schools you are planning on applying to. If you are looking to apply to Western then yes that does fulfill it. If thinking you are at UCLA since you referred to MIMG 102 which is an upper division micro class

Thank you all for the replies. Sorry, I shouldn't have said I assume MIMG would count because it is taught within the microbiology department, but because it is stated as such in the UCLA Career Center web page. I was hoping to get feedback if people knew if this was an accurate statement. I have taken your advice and e-mailed schools about it, I was looking for feedback on whether it was a valid question, and I got it.👍
