I've been borrowing a friend's computer and it has vista...

Worst. OS. Ever.

There are 10,000 background programs and superfluous tool-bars and "helpers". Window animations are flashy and elaborate (think: Word Paperclip) , and horde memory use...I'm currently using over 1000 MB of memory with just firefox running. The multiple security programs are so redundant they interfere with each other, and need to be updated so often that they're more intrusive than the actual viruses and spyware. Overall, function was compromised for simplicity, which sucks if you're not a simpleton.

Gimme Windows XP any day.

It really is a good operating system (except for transfer to external memory devices...) as long as you know how to tame it and it's only going to get better with SP2. It's definitely at a better place than XP was after 2 years.

Flashdrives/MP3 players? How the hell do you **** up something that simple? I'd love to hear how to 'tame' it...

I'm with Marcus Brody. Slow, useless graphics, out-of-control UAC, "more secure" (impossible to open with anything other than The Latest and Greatest) document formats, bloatware up to the ears... XP was sturdy, stable, but apparently not flashy enough for the 21st century.

Windows 7 is supposed to be "Vista 2.0". Maybe round 2 will be better?

What's been the problems with this? I haven't had any difficulty transfering to external memory.

Why not use OS X? When I switched my stress level dropped since I wasn't dealing with the daily annoyances of Windows. I know I sound like a Mac fanboy but I don't understand why you people put up with the crap Windows makes you endure. Probably a better question is why doesn't Microsoft make Windows a great OS? They have the resources, but they choose not to do it right, probably because they make more money by copping out on the quality.

The question needed to ask is why should you need to tame it. If MS put out an OS with the end user in mind you wouldn't need to tame it. The most a user should have to do to set up a computer after getting it out of the box is turning it on and transferring their files and settings. That's it. Taming is something you do with a wild beast not a computer.

I work in tech.

XP very usable, intuitive for finding things, can get to system level easily.

Vista very bloated, systems need at least 2 GB ram just to run smoothly. Vista limits access to system level stuff and always asks me if I really want to do what I am doing. Frustrating to the max! You should not have to "Tame" your system. The only nifty thing I can think of with Vista is that you can have a lot more RAM installed.

Looking forward to Windows 7, looks good, but we shall see is MS does another "Beta Public Release". MS is known for releasing software in the Beta stage and using the public to troubleshoot and patch. I guess that is how they cut costs...

Vista works great for me, as does XP, as does OS X.

I use OS X, Vista & XP. Vista is a royal pain but just turnoff the eye candy and tweak it down. I try not to use that laptop unless I'm traveling.

XP & OS X run rings around it in comparison.

👍

I'll stick with my trusty 4-yr old dell laptop with XP on it. No issues, no viruses, still runs fairly well for being so old. For the average person they can get into trouble with windows pretty quickly (serving shady websites, installing random programs, etc....) but if you keep things up to date and clean it's pretty stable.
