Hey SDN,

I am a Middle School Education major with a 3.52 overall and 3.1 BCPM 27 MCAT. I will be applying to Pikeville's DO program as a KY resident next cycle. ECs are normal with 3 years of work as a CPhT at CVS.

Chances? Thanks!

Pikeville has regional bias and with those stats I would think you would be a shoo in for pikeville as long as you dont screw something up on your app.

While that is comforting, can anyone else give input?

I am also assuming I have no chance at allopathic?
Your sGPA and MCAT are below the 10th percentile, so I'd say no for MD.

Pikeville's average MCAT is something ridiculously low like 23, so you're way ahead of your competition.

Yeah man. Assuming you have decent ECs and personal statement, you are solid for KY. Any reason pikeville? You might be able to snag a more competitive DO school if you are interested.

I never considered any other schools. Mostly going with Pikeville because I am a KY resident and want to practice in KY.

Do you have suggestions for other DO schools?

Depending on where you are in Kentucky, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) could be fairly close to you.

WVSOM:
http://www.wvsom.edu/Applicants/applicants-home
Average Science GPA 3.37
Average MCAT 25
Verbal 8
Physical 8
Biological 9

VCOM:
http://www.vcom.vt.edu/admissions/profile-2015-virginia.html
GPA: The Class of 2015 has an average Science GPA of 3.52 and an average Overall GPA of 3.59.
MCAT: The average MCAT score is above 25 and median writing sample of O.

I attained these values straight from their websites.

Yes, a DO school that has average stats that aren't an entire standard deviation below the average applicant. Anyway, KYCOM is really focused on rural medicine/ family medicine, it's rotations are almost 100% internship/community clinics settings so compared to many other DO schools you'll be seeing a far more limited population and pathologies. That and has been pointed out that KYCOM does have a horrendously low pass rate ( Below 80%) for their COMLEX-1.

thank you all for your responses, I am still learning 👍 I do like the idea of applying to West Virginia.

I am not completely sold on the "rural" physician idea that Pikeville is known for. What benefits does going to a non-rural emphasis Osteopathic program have?

bump to get question answered.

the ability to not go rural. The problem is that pikeville is known for the rural emphasis, so most of their students go that route. If you happen to be one who wants to go into orthopedic surgery (just an example) or something else competitive, it will be much harder simply because of the fact that you aren't likely going to have an alumni in the program, or there won't have been many people that have gone through the program, so they have no standard to say, "yeah pikeville is good." and they won't take a chance. And pikeville has horrible entrance averages, talk of poor board pass rates, and they refuse to release their match results. To me, all of those make me question the quality of the school. And rightly or wrongly, it will probably make others question it as well, leaving you in an unnecessary uphill battle. Especially because you are competitive for some of the better DO programs that won't have any of them problems listed.
