Middle Tier Programs

Can anyone comment on current upper-middle or middle tier programs. There have been discussions in the past, but nothing recently. Everyone knows the top 10-15. What are some other great programs- reputation wise- to note while interviewing?

I personally think programs like Bascom, Wills, Duke, UCLA, UCSF, Michigan, Iowa, Casey, Emory, and USC probably fall above NYEEI and Utah in terms of overall residency/reputation/history/fellowship match. I never know where to place Wilmer/Mass Eye and Ear. That being said these are all very good programs to end up at.

1) bascom
2) wills
3) Wilmer

In ophthalmology times. But who cares. 🙂

I'm mostly curious about places that will provide top notch clinical and research opportunities. Also, I want to go to a place that places their grads in top fellowship regularly. That's what I mean by "top middle" tier. We all know the lists that place Wills and Bascom on top. I mean more than just those programs. ophthoapp puts together a pretty interesting list. I didn't know Pitt was highly considered.

In terms of trying to find these types of programs, I think the best bet might be to speak with an ophtho mentor/letter writer, especially if they're involved with fellows, as they might be able to shed some light on which programs tend to produce the strongest applicants/best surgeons in their personal experience. This is how I approached it, and it was very helpful for me (of course, in addition to all of the valuable information here on SDN 😉 )

Would you all consider doximity the "gold standard" for program rankings? Take Cleveland Clinic for example. On some lists, it is a top 10 program. On the doximity list, it is in the top 20.

Us news ranks departments not residencies. Remember that. This is why I don't think MEEI or Wilmer are top 10 residencies despite them being top 10 departments.

Ophthalmology Times in 2010 ranked programs by Overall, Research, Residency, and Clinical. Wilmer (2) and MEEI (7) are definitely noted as top residencies, at least at the time.

Well the NYC programs can be hit or miss I'd say. NYEE and Columbia still have very strong programs. Rutgers/UMDNJ which is across the river in NJ is also a strong place with great fellowship placement.

Interesting, thanks for the input. How about Cornell, Mt Sinai, NYU and MEETH and even Montefiore (although not Manhattan)? Any info on those? All the institutions seems pretty good overall (all specialities considered)
