I'm looking for some advice on good pediatric residencies in the midwest area. Some ones that I've been looking into are:

Children's Mercy Hospital- kansas city
KU- kansas city
Creighton/Nebraska- Omaha
St. Louis University
University of Louisville- Kentucky
University of Iowa
University of Wisconsin

Anybody have any more suggestions or feedback on these programs?

I have a friend that matched to Children's Mercy in KC. I haven't talked to him since he started so I don't know how he likes it, but I think he was pretty happy to match there and thought it was a good program.

I'm done with my residency at Creighton-UNMC and really thought it prepared me well. If you have to be in the midwest, it's not too bad of a place to be. We have a stand alone Children's Hospital and access to all the specialists a big city would have. We get tons of PICU experience (no fellows-just residents) and I think with the amount of lectures we have that the academics is really up to par. Almost all of our lectures are given by the specialists in our field and we have board review every Friday.

On the bad side, it is in Omaha and we have to rotate at three different hospitals which means a little more call than a single hospital. Our intern year was pretty much call q 4-5days. I would also say that research opportunities are available, but it isn't a huge focus in our program.

On one note though, we really do follow the 80 hour/wk rule and 30 hr shifts. They are really strict about that and I can honestly say I never went over.

Hope that helps.

Gotta add Michigan and Cinci to your list.

Don't forget the happy group at Rainbow in Cleveland :D

How about adding Children's Hospital of Wisconsin/MCW in Milwaukee to that list? PM me if you have any questions about the program :)

U of Minnesota? Anyone have any thoughts?

From the OP's list, I've heard overall good things about SLU and Wisconsin, though honestly not much specific...

I have Minnesota on my list too. Anyone know about how competitive these places are? I don't imagine most places in the Midwest are too competitive, but I'm just curious. Also, does anyone have feedback on the Children's Hosp of Michigan Program (Wayne St U)?

Nice thread - I'm an MS4 also doing Peds, and I'd love to match in the Midwest somewhere.

I hear residents are not happy there ... though no direct experience. There's a big fight going on now between DMC and Wayne State. Not to mention Detroit is kind of a crappy city (even before the mayor was in jail :)).

Don't forget about Indiana! Awesome program and opportunities with Riley Children's Hospital (tertiary referral center and the only children's hospital in the state), Wishard (county hospital, urban/underserved populations), and Methodist (community hospital). All three hospitals are located in downtown Indianapolis in the medical campus and connected via a free monorail. http://www.iupui.edu/~deptpeds/peds/home.html.

Any info about Mayo Clinic? I realize they are stronger in adult medicine

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! I'm going to have to be submitting applications soon and it's wonderful to be getting some new ideas. I like Complications' question though- how competitive are some of these places? I feel like there is really no info out there on which programs are really good and which are not so hot. I'm in the top half of my class (out of 175), 225 on step 1 and 250 on step 2. Is there anywhere that is competitive enough that I shouldn't waste my money applying to? I also have a sig other couple's matching with me in fam med and he has similar stats. Thanks!

With those numbers, you will probably receive most, if not all of the interviews you apply for. No place is off limits, apply anywhere you see yourself possibly living and enjoying! This goes for you and your significant other.

You're gonna be treated like royalty. Good luck!

Just wanted to clarify... The difficulties between WSU and the DMC spare Children's Hospital. Their residency programs are an independent entity are isolated from the other issues on account of their independence. Whether or not the residents are happy depends on which residents you talk to, but in my two months there, by in large, they seemed pretty happy.

Hey - just wanted to put in my 2 cents since I was thinking heavily about staying in the Midwest... here are a couple (definitely not comprehensive) that I really liked in alpha order...

Baylor (yes I know, some of you don't consider Texas in the midwest)
Cincinnati
Children's Memorial - NWU
Comer - UChicago (my alma mater)
UPitt
WashU

WRT the competitiveness... remember that it isn't only about the numbers. You are going into a field where it is about connecting with kids and family and helping through the good and the bad. Programs are looking for people interested in advocacy to research to teaching. Think about what you are leaning towards and that will shape your application and ultimate rank list. Just my 2 cents.

I'd venture a guess that a few people might not consider Pitt in the Midwest either. Then again, I know everything past 495 is "out west" to those in the Boston area;)

I would take DocStretch's opinion over mine ... mine is based on 3rd party info.

Good luck.

any more thoughts out there on children's hospital of michigan in detroit? thanks!

Mayo peds is a great training program that I think is often overlooked. You may think that they are only good for IM and adult related subspecialties, but that is not the case. While the peds program is smaller than the adult programs, it is a fantastic residency that will prepare you well for any field afterwards. Residents here are happy!! They enjoy their families/life outside of residency, and they enjoy their jobs. If you have more questions, PM me! PS - the website does not do the program justice, but that is a Mayo institution thing not a program thing (look at any of the residency web sites for Mayo and they are all about the same).

First interview offer for Wash U in St. Louis. Anybody interview there last year or a current resident now that has any advice/insight?

Jaydoc:

Check out last year's comment board (stickied at the top of the forum), a bunch of SDNers posted about WashU. I really enjoyed my interview there, PM me with specific questions.

Hey guys, does anyone have any info/feedback on SUNY Buffalo? I searched and in an archived thread, found some not-so-flattering reviews. It was from 2003 or something though. Any current students/residents there have anything to share?
