Hi, so Ive been accepted to Midwestern University and to get in I needed the deposit, and I have to be registered as a pharmtech. Sorry if this is off-topic, but I left all my paperwork at school and wanted to look into this when I was home over spring break. How do I go about getting the license?

Thanks and sorry if its a dumb question

which Midwestern?

Arizona or Illinois...

But to simplify things... just google it "Illinois Pharmacy technician license"... Illinois all you have to do is pay like $40 for the license and fill out the form, not too sure about Az...

In Arizona, as soon as you start Pharmacy school you will be an intern (some states require the completion of the first year of P School).

yeah, you don't need a tech cert. if you are a pharmacy student. your enrollment in pharmacy school = automatic intern status.

which is cool esp. for midwestern because some retail chains will give you a P2 wage instead of P1 because MW is a 3 year school.

sound like you are thinking of working as an intern while you are in a 3 year accelerated program.

i don't mean to sound rude...but this go to show you the type of student they accept.....😕

I have talked to a lot of Midwestern students about working while in the CPG program. They have all said the same thing... it is possible to do, many do it, it helps reinforce what you are learning, however you must be a responsible student to balance the two.

Someone who is capable of working and handling an accelerated program.... = smart and dedicated.

Someone who apparently has internet access but instead of researching the question just comes here to ask and get an easy answer. Good luck on the NAPLEX sellout, too bad you can't use SDN while you're taking it, lol.

Yikes what is with the hostility? just stressed out and taking it out on random forumers or what...

Anyways to answer the question, yes, I am definitely planning on working while in pharmacy school. It is definitely possible since a lot of CPG students work and I am used to balancing work and school. The interviewers said that it is best to take your first quarter off to get used to the pace of school and then figure out how much time you can put aside for work. Sounds like a good idea to me!

Ditto... I am planning on starting off at 8-10 hours a week to help my husband pay the bills. You can't study ALL the time- sometimes a little work break is beneficial.

Ganders... where are you planning on working?

No idea! I don't even know if I am going to CPG or U of Iowa. I think that I would most likely get a job at a retail chain because they probably have the most flexible hours, but I am really interested in working at a hospital pharmacy. How about you?
and yes, I definitely know that I will have an extra 10 hours in the week. Some people have never worked while in school so think that it is crazy, but it just really depends on the individual.

I currently work full time at a pharmaceutical manufacturing company... I wont be able to work here part time, so I recently got a job at Walgreens (I live in Phoenix already). I have been working part-time at Walgreens (15-20 hours per week) to get through the massive training so that I can be an intern (who knows how to use their system) in June. It sucks to be working 60+ hours a week right now, but it will be worth it in the long run.

If you get accepted to CPG, which school will you attend?

alby - how many hours is training at walgreens to become an intern? it sounds like you are doing 15-20 but I don't want to work 20 hours while I'm in school. Are they flexible? I'm going to be interviewing at a walgreens in pheonix as well.

You know, I actually have no idea at the moment where I will be attending. Part of me hopes that CPG rejects me so I have an easy decision, but who am I kidding... I would love to get into CPG. I'm trying to make a pro/con list but it is not proving too useful. I really like CPG's new facilities and the fact that it is an accelerated program and not too far from my home (about 6 hours). Also, there is more diversity in the student body and I won't be the only Asian girl on campus . However, I like that Iowa has a huge campus and a large hospital associated with the university, so it will have better opportunities for practical experiences and the university itself is more well-known and prestigious than MW. But I know that it doesn't really matter what pharmacy school you go to as long as you pass the NAPLEX and Iowa is very far from home. In short... no idea! How did you choose?

I was told by my pharmacy manager that they are very flexible for interns. She said they love having interns in the store... watch out they will try and recruit you to sign a scholarship contract... if you are thinking about it- make sure you read the fine print carefully.

During my training I did 21 hours a week- now that I am on at my home store I will be doing more like 10-15, when school starts I am hoping to do 8-10- its not very busy in the summer anyway.

My training was about 70 hours- this is in store training and computer training combined. There is A TON of computer training- IC+ (their computer system) mostly that takes forever (if you do it correctly). I just wanted to be familar with their system before I am an intern. The computer system takes a lot of time to learn- especially if you work part time. Its hard to reinforce when you only owrk a few days a week.

At which store will you be interviewing?

It was a very agonizing decision- browse my previous posts for more details... you definitely won't be the only asian girl... I'm beginning to wonder if I will be the only white girl (not that I mind)?
