Any thoughts on midwestern programs - OSU, Indiana, Case, Cinci, and Kresge? From what I saw, all of them seemed to have solid comprehensive training (all have some association with a VA and free-standing peds hospital), very friendly faculty and residents, and I believe all subspecialties are covered in the department. Location aside, I am trying to figure out if there were any nuances that I missed. As far as my goals, I would like to pursue a fellowship (most likely in retina, but not completely sure at this point) and would be interested in academic medicine afterwards.

You may want to dig up archives to find out prior comments. Here are a couple of links from last year where their residents provided input.

I suspect Detroit going bankrupt has negatively impacted the quality of life there even if the program itself is not impacted.
