Now that I'm done with finals I'm finally ready to get down to business and make a decision. Right now I'm leaning towards midwestern, but I can't get rid of that voice in the back of my mind telling me I'm a fool for choosing a school that hasn't produced a graduating class yet over a school with a proven history like OSU. What do you guys think?

I was in essentially the same position as you. I had been accepted to a couple more prestigious schools (OHSU, Indiana), but I settled in Midwestern for a few reasons. The schools is brand new. It has the top of the line everything. They take the boards after year 1. Their curriculum is system- based, and their whole school is based on preparing us for private practice. There is no research there, so all of your teachers are those who have actually been in private practice. They have an outstanding patient pool (they are next to one of the largest retirement communities in the country). While the shool costs a little more, you see what you are paying for. Glendale and the surrounding areas are great places to live and cheap, helping balancing out the higher shoolig costs. The dean, Dr. Glipatrick, is awesome and very dedicated to the students. Talking to him was what convinced me to go there. Anyway that has been my experience. Hope to see you in the fall!

I interviewed at Midwestern and fell in love with the school. I think in a few years it will truly be one of the elite programs. (Not that it isn't an elite program right now, it will just be more established and reputable) However, I hate bringing up the money issue but I personally couldn't bring myself to shell out the money to attend MWU when OSU is an option. I wasn't accepted to MWU, but when I sent in my deposit to OSU it was like writing myself a $100 K check! How could you turn down in-state tuition for a guaranteed 3 years with the possibility of 4 years if your spouse works in-state? I know that the OP isn't married so the 4 year isn't an option, but the cost of attendance is significantly cheaper at OSU. When I talked to some of the students at MWU they mentioned that they would be graduating with close to $400 k in debt! As much as I love MWU, I love money in my pocket more. You'll be patting yourself on the back every day for the next 30 years.
Arizona truly is a great place to live with the housing market, you can find some very affordable condos and houses. However, Columbus isn't too shabby either. You'll be able to find some very affordable housing options whether you buy or rent.
It's a tough decision if you're just comparing the schools across the board without considering money. MWU is very tempting with all of its bells and whistles (digital everything, new facilities), it makes Ohio look like it was built in the dark ages. However, OSU has been producing strong dentists for years, making me believe that facilities don't play that large of a role in the quality of education one receives. Both schools seem to have terrific faculty, and the students seemed happy. At the end of the day, I've come to terms that the education you receive is entirely dependent upon what you put into it, so you might as well save some money in the process! Good luck in your decision OP.

I love MWU. But if I had gotten in to my state school, I would have gone there without hesitation. Cost >>> everything else.

how much cheaper would the instate school be? if it's more than 100k over the 4 years, go instate. if it's only 50k cheaper, go to MWU

When did 50k became only? I suppose when interest rates hit 0.0%.

Send your deposit to Ohio and enjoy your time before school starts.

If the only thing you're concerned about is the fact that MWU is a new school, then I think you should just go there. It is new, yes, but like others have said the program is excellent. I interviewed there and the dean was so nice and really sold the school well - everything is brand new, the campus is beautiful, people seem happy and friendly, excellent clinical preparation. They have a great philosophy that is completely focused on helping the students succeed. I was accepted and would have gone there, but it's too expensive and too far from home for me. Plus, I'm missing a prerequisite so I would have to take that in the summer if I wanted to attend. But if those things aren't a factor for you and you're really just worried about the reputation, then you really shouldn't worry. I think everyone that has interviewed there would agree that their school and program is top-notch.
