Okay, I was initially accepted into SGU and waitlisted at Midwestern as well as a couple others back and decided to just accept my seat at SGU because I'm ready to start the next step in my career path. I've lived in Texas all my life and haven't moved away from home. Undergrad was a couple of miles from home, and so I felt it was wasteful to spend money I didn't necessarily have moving into an apartment. I was able to pay for the entirety of my undergrad with scholarships and grants, so I am debt free in that aspect. A lot of my family was on the fence about the first place I move to being 2000 miles away. Of course, it's been an adjustment, but we've finally accepted it, and I've booked my flights, quarantine accomodations and put down a deposit on a fully furnished apt. All totaling over 2000$ so far. Yesterday, I get a call that I'm being offered a seat in Midwestern's class. Shocked is an understatement for my reaction. I know that their tuition cost is roughly $20k more for the first year and the cost of living seems much more pricey in Glendale, although I noticed some places offer discounts to students. I can't help but wonder if the costs would ultimately equal out with traveling expenses to and from Grenada as well as the cost of customs when bringing in vital items. And then, of course, my cat who happens to be an ESA. They aren't recognized in Grenada, so rent is an additional 100$ to have him with me. I feel so torn, but want to make my decision as soon as possible so they can call the next person on the list. I've spoken to everyone in my family and they all have mixed opinions as well, so I'm hoping to get some insight from both sides!

I don’t attend either school but the VIN cost of education may be helpful (link below). They show the total cost of attendance being higher for Midwestern than St. George’s 😵

Thank you for that! After the first year, it's estimated I'll have accrued about 30k more in debt choosing Midwestern over SGU. I'm not sure how possible it is, but I am hoping I'd be able to transfer to one of my two IS schools for my second year. I've found more transfers from island schools more than state schools, but I'm hoping if I can work to get top grades and good LORs, that I can get a transfer. My S/O is in the military and will finish his contract next year, and we agreed we would try to be as close to family as possible bc his sister has Rett syndrome and want to be able to get back home should anything happen.

That's a tough decision. It seems like even with travel costs and pet fees SGU would still be cheaper. Also if you're unable to transfer, at SGU you should be able to try to do your clinical year close to your S/O. And even if you do transfer after 1st year, you'll have saved 30k, which is a decent chunk of money.

Either way, you're going to vet school, which is super awesome - congrats!

Thank you so much! It's still all a little surreal, but I'll be making my final decision today! Good luck to you and your future endeavors!!
