I applied a little late this year, and as a non-trad w/ full time work it's going to be hard to make my application significantly better in the next 7 months. I'm thinking about applying to MPH programs in hopes of then submitting my re-application med school app between yrs 1-2. I really want to be in school next year, and I very much want to get MPH skills for a future in academic medicine anyway. Am I just kicking the can down the road by doing a 2 yr MPH program (almost 30 y/o)?

Background: Great science GPA, mediocre cGPA, MCAT >35. Lots of clinical research, year of full time volunteer work with vulnerable pop.

MCAT of 35...Good ec...nice gpa...you just applied late to the game. Hit it early next year and you'll be fine. If you really want a mph, fine, go for it, but I seriously doubt it is holding you back not having it

Complete Sept 20's. Submitted secondaries late Sept and throughout October.

You were complete at all your schools by mid october? That's more than a little late.

Ouch.

You might get some interviews, but they'll probably be given out in december/jan.

What was your school list?

Einstein
Boston U
Columbia
Dartmouth
Emory
Harvard
Loyola
Mount Sinai
NYMC
Tufts
UCSF (rec'd secondary)
Umass
UPenn

Rejections from Brown, USC

had a bunch more on the list (drexel, g-town, temple, rush) but didn't complete secondary quickly so they're not viable.

Did you apply to drexel/temple/rush? Like, did you finish the secondaries or not?

Your list is EXTREMELY top heavy. That doesn't bode super well for you given that you just finished applying. I stick to what I said above. You might get some interviews in the next month or two, but your list is too damn top heavy anyway so your school list is a crap shoot to begin with.

Agreed. I did not submit secondaries to drexel/temple/rush/gtown. Doing it again, I would have submitted those first.

Agree 100%. You're toppling over with those big names.
Apply early, get some more normal names on your list. Regardless if you are a good candidate to those select schools, you need to expand your list to get enough odds. Dropping down a tier would multiply your chances

If you truly think you'll use the MPH then go for it, but you are kicking the can down the road a bit and could apply this June and also apply to joint MD/MPH programs or do your MPH after training or during certain fellowships. Depending on the program, sometimes the cost is covered, so you could save money delaying til later.
