Hey everyone, Apologies for yet another “Am I good enough?” post, but like those other posters, I could really use some honest outside perspective.
Stats & Background:
• GPA: 3.72 cGPA | 4.0 sGPA (with biochem & physics in progress)
• Associates in Health Science: 4.0 (80
credit hours)
• BSN: 3.35 GPA (60 credit hours) • Clinical Experience: 6,000 hours as a registered nurse
Journey:
I took an unusual path to get here. I dropped out of high school during my freshman year. Eventually, I got embarrassed with not even having a GED and while working in the oil field is good compensation, I wanted a better, more meaningful life. So, I earned my GED at 21, finished my associate’s at 23, and got my BSN by 25. Now, at 28, I’ve grown from an apethetic kid to a man I respect. In the process of that growth, my life has been grown into something great.
The only thing I’m not satisfied with is my job. I love healthcare and nursing. Since starting nursing, I’ve been hungry to understand medicine on a deeper level. I’ve increased my knowledge of medicine a lot through individual studying. That same studying has led me to two problems that eat away at me. Firstly, I can’t possibly understand everything I want without further formal education. Two, I want to be able to act on that knowledge. I want to make the care plan, not just carry it out.
Anyways, I thought I would be a good applicant, until I spent to much time on this forum and premed subreddits, the stats of some people really having me questioning my own.
I’m planning to take the MCAT in Spring 2026 and apply in the 2026 cycle. Aside from crushing the MCAT, what else can I do to make myself a more competitive applicant?
Other App Details:
• letters likely from RN leadership, midlevels, and MDs I’ve worked closely with.
• Currently working on building a relationship with a professor for an academic LOR, but it’s been a while since undergrad.
• No research experience.
• Volunteering: 200–300 hours at an animal shelter. I also have some scattered hours from nursing school (food banks, homeless shelters, etc.).
• No shadowing hours, with my background I’m not sure if it matters? I can easily get some if it will help my app.
A Note on Midlevel Roles: Yes, I’ve considered NP and CRNA, but to be honest, I don’t think I’d be satisfied with the role. l don’t find those programs to be as rigorous as I’d like.
Thanks for reading. I’m happy for any advice on my situation or just general tips to be successful.
