Hi all,

We've done a lot of searching on here about military med. It has been very useful - especially the Path forum, thank you! My husband is a 4th year path resident (civilian) and will do a cytopath fellowship (civilian). We are thinking very seriously about joining the military as a career (not getting out once obligation is over). We have children and I do not work. I have some questions for you military path doctors:

1. I've read on here that army pathology is the best. Can you explain why that is?

2. With a cytopath fellowship, where would my husband most likely be stationed in the army? I've read that it would most likely be in Tacoma, D.C. or San Antonio bc of his fellowship training. Is that true and what has your experience been? Are you able to find decent housing close to the medical center - and does your bah cover the cost?

3. In the army (or navy or air force) - how often do pathologists get relocated or transferred (sorry if there's another term to use)?

4. Are any of you in the air force or navy? Where have you been stationed as a pathologist? It looks like from my research, you would be stationed in San Diego, D.C. or Portsmouth in the navy. Is this true? Are you able to afford decent housing in these areas with your bah?

5. We've spoken with an air force recruiter (not army or navy yet) and they don't have sponsorships for pathology right now. The recruiter asked my husband a bunch of questions (physical stuff, mcat scores, etc.) and asked him to send in his cv. To get a sponsorship in the air force (or army or navy), do you think if we got the application process started now, and hounded them every few months for a year, would we have a chance?

We have an air force path friend, so I feel like I know more about the air force through talking with him. When we talked with him, we definitely got the feeling that he was frustrated that he wasn't getting the volume he needed to be trained and ready to jump back into a civilian practice (also he has lots of trainings and leadership duties that keep him from his slides). For those of you in the army and navy - do you also feel that way? Any of you staying in and making this a career?

6. We've heard air force is downsizing. Is the army as well? navy?

Any input would be very appreciated. Thanks for your time and help!
