Hello. I spoke to a Army recruiter regarding the HPSP scholarship. He said that immediately after Med scool, I would get a chance to do residency. If i am unsuccessful at obtaining residency at either Military or Civilian hospital, I would do one year internship and then apply for residency again. So is it true that Army does not require its students to act as GMOs immediately after first four years of Med School? Does it let them finish their residency (DO or MD) first and then start the active duty?

None of the services would require someone to serve as a GMO immediately after med school. You need to have a medical license to work as a GMO. You need to do an internship first. The only way to obtain an unrestricted medical license is to complete at least one year of internship (military or civilian). Some states require two years of GME. When working as a military physician it doesn't matter which state you have a license in.

Doing one year of civilian residency isn't always a great option. I can't speak for the Army, but I've heard these folks are significantly hampered in the Navy match as they are competing against folks known in the military system, and generally end up doing GMO tours following their internship.
