i need help on a current mental condition... where a person is laying down or closing there eyes where unpredictable images and settings come into mind without control or thought, ive had a patient who told me that whenever they closed there eyes (not sleeping) they would see really wierd stuff out of there control such as an airplane turning in circles on a empty runway and a women wearing a backless blue dress with flowers all around her, he said these things were out of his control and couldnt get rid of them until they went away on there own... any ideas?

Sounds a little like something that a friend of mine has actually, a form of OCD called "pure obsessions" or "pure O." For him, he constantly sees bad things that could happen to those he loves, it makes him obsess over it but never leads to any sort of compulsive behavior. I know that pure obsessions can come in many different shapes and forms, so perhaps this is something like that. Sounds similar because my friend says that these images are very visual and uncontrollable.

thank you for the help.. another similar problem which is very hard to understand is that something tells a person to do something or else he thinks if he doesnt do it perfect something bad will happen to something for example

a person goes to reach a spoon out of the cupboard and theres 3 spoons, one has a spot on it and one has no spot on it, now if he grabs the one with a spot on it something in his head will tell him "put the spotted spoon back and get the clean one or something bad will happen cause you didnt do it perfectly" so he puts the spotted spoon back and takes the clean one, then the controlling problem goes away until it comes up again, sometimes its really bad and sometimes its not.. and you have no control over it because you think if you dont do it right something will truely happen? any ideas?

still sounds like OCD, which can manifest in all sorts of ways. Unless when you say "something tells them to do ..." and you actually mean the person is hearing voices. That's a whole different can of worms! But I'm assuming you mean there is some sort of internal urge/need to do things in a certain way. That's very OCD. A person obsesses (i.e. the spoons aren't dealt with correctly and this can lead to terrible things happening) and to prevent the terrible thing from happening that person can develop compulsions (i.e. repeatedly checking the spoons to make sure they're in the right order, cleaning the spoons, basically satisfying whatever they *need* to do for the terrible thing to not happen)

p.s. I am no expert on this, I just happen to have that friend I mentioned with Pure O and a little brother with OCD. I'd advise checking everything over with a textbook or a professor if this is for an exam or something along those lines.

Yes, check it over and over. Then before you head out the door, make sure and double-check it again, because you just might have gotten your facts mixed up and you promised your mother that you would do very well in school, and you wouldn't want to let her down, and then it would be a good idea to write everything down on a piece of paper you keep in your back pocket, and be sure to periodically check that piece of paper on the way into taking the test, only make sure that you throw that paper away before entering the test-taking room, and then double-check your pockets that the paper has been thrown away, because if you get caught with that sheet of paper it could be seen as cheating, and you could be placed on academic probation, even expelled, and your mother would certainly be very, very upset about that....

Sarcasm, okay, I get that part. But are you making fun of me or the OP? Maybe not making fun, just bored? I'm confused. But hey, it's 8am and I just woke up, so I'll try reading this again in a few hours and maybe I'll get the joke.

That's really funny, it is early and I haven't had my coffee yet...I get the joke...

Yowza I feel stupid! If I could I would stick in a smiley who's doing that hand motion of the joke going over his head.

My intent was merely in jest. I'm glad you found the humor in it.

Vantrom,
This seems very very much like OCD. If you are a mental health professional, you have probably heard of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. If you are interested, check out "The Feeling Good Handbook" by Dr.David Burns, MD. It is not an OCD treatment book, per se, but provides a very good, basic grounding on CBT. CBT is often more effective in OCD patients than medication.

cheers.
